News & notes

UAlbany's men's basketball team closes its regular season at Vermont tonight, hoping to break the Catamounts' hex over them. They're figuring the snow will stop by the time the Great Danes are ready to leave campus for the game, which can be heard on WTMM (104.5).

As of right now, the Section II hockey championship game between Bethlehem and the Capital District Jets is still on for tonight at Union College, with a puck drop scheduled for 6 pm, though someone associated with the Jets suggested that if the game needs to be postponed due to weather, it can be moved to Wednesday night. Good thinking.

Advocates for retaining Native American team nicknames in Section II have an unlikely champion in their corner in NY Misrepresentative Elise Stefanik of Schuylerville.

Ms. Stefanik is claiming the state department of education has "misplaced priorities" in calling for the name changes. No, they don't. You do. Maybe if you paid more attention to the situation as it presently stands, you could see things differently.

In other words, Ms. Stefanik, get a clue.

We're also waiting to find out if tonight's basketball sectionals in Glens Falls (Cool Insuring Arena) & Troy (Hudson Valley Community College) will be played as scheduled or be postponed and moved to another night. However, with another storm system heading into the Capital Region at the end of the week, they may have little choice but to try. We'll see.

Update, 11:22 am: Section II is going ahead with both the basketball sectionals and the hockey finals.
