News & notes

In a shocker, the Albany Empire dismissed head coach Tom Menas following a Wednesday practice. The official word is that the team wanted to go in a different direction. New co-owner Antonio Brown, an Albany area native, was among the members of the ownership team to make the decision, and he even admitted in an interview with WNYT that he had only met Menas a couple of days earlier. There's something that no one is telling, and while offensive coordinator Damon Ware will be head coach for now, don't be too surprised if the mercurial Brown, whose diva behavior cut short his NFL career, is angling for the coach's job himself.

The team opens its 2023 season one week from today at MVP Arena, looking to 3-peat. Could the decision to dump Menas, who led the team to back-to-back titles, come back to haunt them? Stay tuned.

Troy High's softball team snapped a 2 game losing streak in thrashing Whitesboro in a non-league tilt, 15-1, in 5 innings on Saturday. Senior ace Olivia DeCitise went the full five innings, striking out 11. The Lady Horses are right back at it Monday afternoon vs. Chatham before resuming league play on Wednesday vs. Shaker.

However, as of press time, a baseball doubleheader between Troy & Guilderland had not been reported by either school, and with schools closed this week for Easter/Spring recess, it'll be tougher than usual to get results on time for newspaper deadlines. Troy will host Shaker on Wednesday.
