News & notes

After taking 2022 off, the Troy Fighting Irish are returning next month in a new league, the Gridiron Developmental League. Either the Irish have left the Northeastern Football Alliance, or the NFA is gone, and the Irish, along with their nemesis, the Syracuse Strong, have migrated to the new league. Here, then, is their 2023 schedule:

I would suspect that the GDL is the NFA with a new name. We'll see. The Watertown Red & Black's history dates back to the Empire Football League in the 70's, when they played against the Metro Mallers.

Troy High's lacrosse team picked up its 1st win of the season Thursday, outlasting Albany, 8-4. Troy returns home Monday afternoon for the 1st half of a home & home series with Hudson Falls. The Flying Horses (1-2) are playing more of an independent schedule this season, just as their soccer teams did this past fall.

In other Troy news, the school has added flag football to the spring sports calendar to give the women an alternative to softball. Tryouts began this week, with the season opener set for April 17. While the opponents for the team's home games have not been announced, the ladies will embark on road trips to Washingtonville (April 26), Rhinebeck (May 12), & Saugerties (May 13), the latter pair being played in less than 24 hours. As you can see, the games are being played on weeknights instead of weekly. The season ends with a road game at a site to be determined on May 20. We're hoping Troy can supply the media with more information before the home opener in 10 days.
