News & notes

A wire service article in today's papers says that Andre Jackson, Jr. (Albany Academy), if he decides to go ahead and enter the NBA draft next month, could be a late 1st round or early 2nd round pick. Jackson, who, along with his UConn teammates, recently visited the White House to meet President Biden, has not yet made a firm commitment, but has been invited to a draft combine next week in Chicago. That may be where he makes his final decision. Stay tuned.

The Tri-City Valleycats will have an 80's icon in the house on June 1.

Darryl Strawberry will appear not only at Joe Bruno Stadium, but he'll also speak at Hudson Valley Community College that same day.

Strawberry won World Series rings with the Mets (1986) and Yankees (1996), and in between, also played for San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Today, he's a motivational speaker encouraging kids and young adults not to make the same mistakes he made as a player with drugs.

With 2 games left, Troy High might want to rethink men's lacrosse.

Sure, the modified programs for men & women have been far more successful, but the men's varsity, following a 12-1 pasting at Hudson Falls last night, have been outscored, 102-16, this season. Half of those goals Troy scored came in one game, vs. Albany last month. Since then, the defense has disappeared at times in the course of an 8 game losing streak. Troy visits Hoosick Falls on Saturday.

Those of you attending today's CBA-Shaker baseball game, please note that the site & time have been changed.

As part of a season-long effort to help CBA coach Casey O'Connor combat rectal cancer, the Brothers have been doing plenty of fund raising, and the best way to go about it today is to have their game vs. Shaker, originally a road game in Latham, moved to Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. 1st pitch is scheduled for 7 pm. O'Connor is 2 years removed from leading CBA to a Class AA title, and was diagnosed with rectal cancer in February. O'Connor previously had been the head man at the College of St. Rose, where he'd succeeded Bellizzi in 2007.
