Troy High spring sports in the homestretch

One week remains in the regular season for Troy High softball & baseball, slightly longer for track, lacrosse, & flag football. The sectionals for baseball & softball begin roughly around May 16-17. As for the others? Flag football is in an experimental phase before the state green-lights a full schedule next year, so when the Lady Horses finish their season May 20, that's it. Troy might send some individual talent to sectionals, but the team has not won a meet in years, though they came close recently. Tennis? Fuhgeddaboutit!! It's gotten so bad, scores don't appear in the papers (space limitations).

To be fair, Troy tennis had two matches postponed this week due to weather, but neither Columbia nor Shenendehowa are in any hurry to reschedule.

So, let's break it down:

Flag football (3-2): The ladies finish the season on the road. The trip starts with a hastily scheduled rematch with Plattsburgh on Monday, followed by a rematch with Rhinebeck on Friday, and Saugerties on Saturday. A game is scheduled for May 20, site unknown. Troy has yet to win on the road, and Plattsburgh & Rhinebeck in particular are thirsting for payback. We've only been able to obtain information via social media, as scores are not being reported.

Lacrosse (1-8): After another blowout loss today at home vs. Columbia, the Troy laxmen have three games left, all against teams outside the Suburban Council. They have a rematch vs. Hudson Falls on Tuesday, then travel to Hoosick Falls (Wasaren League) next Saturday, and finish with Senior Day vs. Amsterdam on May 15. A sectional bid would amount to a participation trophy at this point. Things are so bad, the modified women's lacrosse team has a better record!

Projected finish: 1-11. Ugh.

Baseball (3-9 Suburban Council): From champions to pretenders in two quick seasons. While Chris Stack's club has played their hearts out, trying to replace Mike Kennedy, their star pitcher the last two seasons, has been difficult. It's said they need 6 league points to advance to the post-season. If a league win is 2 points, then they're in. If not, uh-oh.

Troy is at CBA on Monday, and close at home on Senior Day Wednesday vs. Bethlehem.

Projected finish: 4-10. CBA has not been its usual self, either.

Softball (14-3, 9-3 Suburban Council): Sean Geisel's club has won 7 straight since losing to Ballston Spa. Olivia DeCitise should reach 700 career strikeouts before the sectionals begin. She's also doing her best impersonation of Shohei Ohtani, as she is a dual threat at the plate and in the circle. Troy got on this same kind of roll last year, leading to a sectional title, and falling short of the state title.

The ladies play their last non-league game Monday at Schuylerville, then close at home with Bethlehem on Wednesday, and a rematch vs. Guilderland on Friday. I'd say Friday would be Senior Day, but then, they might want to honor the baseball & softball teams on the same day.

Projected finish: 17-3 (11-3 league). Grey division title.

As noted, the sectionals begin May 16 or 17 (pairings will be announced either May 15 or 16). For softball, all roads lead to Luther Forest in Malta. For baseball, the destination is Joe Bruno Stadium the week of May 22.
