News & notes

Whatever momentum Troy High had built in beating Albany on Tuesday dissipated Friday in a loss to Schenectady.

As previously reported, the game was originally set for the Pat Riley Center on the Schenectady campus. For whatever reason, the game was moved to Clem Zotto Memorial Gym at Troy, with the Patriots remaining the home team. The two teams will return to Zotto Gym for a Troy home game on January 12.

Anyway, the Merritt brothers, Stetson & Legend, combined for 40 points (28 & 12, respectively), but no other Troy player was in double figures, as the Patriots got a nice Christmas present with an 86-70 victory.

City rivals LaSalle & Catholic Central met on Friday, and the Crusaders swept the two games.

The women handed the fledgling LaSalle women's team their worst loss of the season, 72-22, holding Kate Gilooly to just 5 points. Catholic Central placed four players in double figures, led by Tarovia Turpin with 23 points. Kris Foglia added 17.

Across town, at Monsignor Burns Gym (CCHS still plays their home games in Troy despite the campus now in Latham), Darien Moore led all scorers with 29 points, handing the Cadets their first loss of the season, 73-52.

Chase Rose had a goal and 2 assists, as LaSalle defeated CBA in hockey, 4-1, on Friday. Tim Flanigan's club evens its league record at 1-1 (3-2 overall) heading into the annual Mohawks tournament at Union College on Wednesday. LaSalle will play Mohawk Valley Wednesday night, while the host Mohawks play Whitesboro, and then swap opponents on Thursday.

On Saturday......

Queensbury 6, CBA 1.
Adirondack 3, Mohawks 1.
Bethlehem & Canisius played to a 4-4 tie.
McQuaid 11, Albany Academy 1.
