News & notes

It was not a good day for UAlbany on Saturday.

The men's lacrosse home opener at Casey Stadium started off promising, but Colgate shut the Great Danes down in the latter stages of the 4th quarter to escape with an 11-10 victory.

In Baltimore, the men's basketball team fell to UMBC, 80-75, despite 30 points from Sebastian Thomas. The Danes are now one game from the America East basement. The absence of sophomore Jonathan Beagle (personal reasons) has hurt Albany big time, perhaps in the same way Siena was damaged by a spate of injuries to their sophomore star, Michael Eley, this season.

The women's lacrosse team is still looking for its 1st win after dropping a 15-10 decision to Fairfield (MAAC) on Saturday.

There was a silver lining, though, for Albany.

The women defeated UMBC, 58-56, behind 16 points from Kayla Cooper, and 10 from Deja Evans. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) chipped in with 8, and Abby Ray (Saratoga) finished with 2 points.

The men return home to play Vermont on Thursday, while the ladies travel to the Green Mountain State.

Back in Troy, Chase Rose had a hat trick to lead the skating Cadets past the Mohawks, 5-2, setting up a quarterfinal round match with Shenendehowa on Monday afternoon at 3 pm.

It's been nearly 8 years since the locally based Dynasty Pro Wrestling hosted a card in Albany itself. Co-promoter Chris Envy finally brought the Dynasty back to Albany Saturday night for a card at Empire Live on North Pearl Street, the same venue that lost a Fozzy concert when Chris Jericho decided not to reschedule after cancelling due to injury issues in AEW.

Former NXT wrestler Velveteen Dream (Tough Enough granduate Patrick Clark) returned to the ring fir the first time in nearly 4 years, disrupting the opening match on the card....

Dream issued an open challenge, answered by Alec Odin for the main event, won by Dream, who was cut by WWE in 2020 amidst allegations of sexual abuse away from the ring.

The Albany FireWolves snapped a recent losing streak, beating Colorado, 13-11, at MVP Arena on Saturday night. Tye Kurtz had a hat trick to lead the 'Wolves, who now share 1st place with Toronto. Albany travels to Buffalo next Saturday night.
