News & notes

One week before the NFL draft, a possible prospect from UAlbany has passed away.

Amitral "AJ" Simon died suddenly on Wednesday. Cause of death is unknown as of press time. Simon, a linebacker, registered 17 1/2 sacks, 12 1/2 during the 2023 season, in which the Great Danes made a run at the NCAA FCS title, finishing 11-4.

Our condolences to the Simon family.

Bill Arsenault, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, devoted a large chunk of his alumni column to Duke softball 3rd baseman Ana Gold (Ballston Spa). Gold has played all 41 games for the Blue Devils this season (37-4, 16-2 ACC), and is hitting .275 with 7 HR's, 2 doubles, 3 triples, and 34 RBI. Check the ACC Network listings to see if you'll get to watch Duke this weekend.

There are no box scores for flag football last night, but what we do know is that Shaker fell from the ranks of the undefeated, as Niskayuna went to 3-0 in beating the Lady Bison, 33-26, on Wednesday night. Columbia is also 3-0 after winning on Monday, and Troy stays unbeaten after taking down Bethlehem.

Former LaSalle standout Eddie Yamin also got a write-up from Bill Arsenault today.

Yamin, now a sophomore at Dayton, is hitting .321 with 9 homers and 36 RBI's, both tops on the Flyers. Dayton is 6-3 in the Atlantic 10, and will soon meet up with Brett Young & George Washington University.
