News & notes

Less than 5,000 fans attended the Albany Firebirds' home opener Saturday at MVP Arena. This is likely due to some reservations about the team, since some of the personnel were part of the Albany Empire last season, and while the weasel who destroyed the team, Antonio Brown, is nowhere near Albany this time, and causing havoc elsewhere by leading with his mouth, as usual, there might've been a few skeptics. Plus, the game was originally scheduled to air on NFL Network, but, as reported yesterday, that was bounced at the last minute, though Thursday's home game vs. Nashville will air on NFL Network.

Anyway, it did take some time for the Firebirds, 2024 edition, to find their groove, and a second half comeback forced overtime, in which the 'Birds defeated Orlando, 62-59. It wasn't pretty, but they'll certainly take it.

They did play the 2nd game of a doubleheader at Troy High vs. Schuylerville. The Black Horses salvaged a split by beating the hosts, 8-6, after dropping the opener in 8 innings, 6-5. Troy will host Chatham tomorrow.

Today's Albany FireWolves playoff at MVP Arena vs. Halifax won't be seen on local television. WNYA only carries regular season games, and instead, the game will air on ESPNU (Spectrum channel 370). We'll see if the 'Wolves can top the attendance of the Firebirds from last night, or if they lose fans to the Patroons, who will be up the hill at the Washington Avenue Armory, hosting Virginia Valley. Both games begin a 3 pm.

After starting the season 8-0, LaSalle has dropped its last two baseball games, the latest a 5-4 setback to Bethlehem on Saturday. The Cadets are now 8-2 overall
