Troy High spring sports update

No one at Troy High, one would assume, thought that the women's softball team would be 1 game under .500 overall as we're nearly a month into the season.

But, the reality is, Troy is 3-4, 2-4 in the Suburban Council, after losing to Guilderland on Friday. They have just 1 senior (Katie Pryor) on this year's roster, but the core of the team will still be around for at least another year. They have two regular pitchers at least in Lauren Matthews & Kaylee Kussler, instead of riding the left arm of Olivia DeCitise, who herself has been struggling as a freshman at UMass-Lowell, such that they have her pitching out of the bullpen for now.

The road ahead: Troy will have a return match at Cohoes on Monday, as the Tigers will seek to avenge losses earlier this season and last season vs. the Lady Horses. After that, Troy is at Saratoga on Wednesday before returning home to play Schenectady on Friday & a non-league game against Schuylerville on Saturday.

As for the rest.....

Flag football: Troy, pending the outcome of Friday's game vs. Shenendehowa, is 3-0. The Shen game was not reported to the local press as of press time. The Horses will visit Schenectady on Wednesday before coming back home to play undefeated Niskayuna Friday night, and close the month of April at Columbia on April 29.

Update, 4/22: Troy fell from the undefeated ranks on Friday in losing to Shen. They join Columbia & Albany at 3-1.

Men's lacrosse: Not including Saturday's game vs. Scotia, Troy has yet to win a game this season, and have been routinely blown out in each game. There's a reason Troy's website doesn't include results of the lacrosse matches.

Update, 4/22: Troy is now 0-6 after losing to Scotia.

The road ahead: The Troy laxmen will play under the lights vs. Voorheesville on Tuesday night, though technically it's a twilight game, as the game starts at 7 pm. Then, they'll visit LaSalle on Wednesday at 6 pm.

Baseball: Trevor McCarthy, in his 1st season, is also 3-4 after thumping Guilderland, 9-2, Friday, finishing a stretch where the Horses played 5 games in as many days due to weather. It isn't so bad this week, just 3 games in 4 days.

The road ahead: LaSalle returns to THS Monday after Troy got bumped out of Bruno Stadium (weather-related reasons) last week. Jesse Braverman's Cadets blew out Troy last year. Currently undefeated, LaSalle shouldn't expect an easy mark this time. The Horses will then hit the road to play Saratoga Wednesday night, and a late afternoon game at Queensbury on Thursday. Friday's game vs. Schenectady has been cancelled, as the Patriots don't have enough players to fill the roster this season. Not sure if that will go as a forfeit win for Troy.

While the outdoor track teams have had some standout individual performances, coach Jordan Canzeri is still looking for that elusive first win. Tennis? Fuhgeddaboutit!!! The tennis results have not been submitted to the press to avoid embarrassment, as I'd suspect they haven't won a meet yet this season.

While it appears baseball, flag football, & softball will all advance to the post-season, one wonders how the school will address the issues with the other sports as it transitions to the Colonial Council next season. Stay tuned.
