High School Fridays: Shenendehowa @ Shaker, 9/6/24

Friday Night Matchup begins a new season with a Class AA rivalry game between long time Suburban Council foes Shenendehowa and Shaker meeting in Latham.

The Bison won the coin toss, and opted to take the ball to start the game. At first, it was a war of attrition, as each team was stopped on downs on their initial drives.

With under a minute to go, Shaker's Jake Smith caught a 4 yard pass from Marcus Snipes for the first score of the night. Smith is also the placekicker, and added the point after to give Shaker a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

Shaker's defense kept Shenendehowa's Ihsaan Aloize bottled up for much of the first half, save for one 39 yard run in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Smith scored again with under six minutes left in the half, this time a 3 yard run. Shaker went into the break with a 14-0 lead.

In the 3rd quarter, things went from bad to worse for Shen. Jake Clawson, son of coach Brian Clawson, tried a backward pass that was fumbled. Melvin Brown scooped it up, and scampered 41 yards to the house, giving Shaker a 21-0 lead. Aloize finally got Shen on the board with under three minutes left in the frame. Still, the Plainsmen were down, 21-7, going into the 4th quarter.

After Smith had cramped in the 3rd quarter, coach Greg Sheeler decided to ease him into rest for the rest of the night. Snipes, however, was tossed in the 3rd quarter after his 2nd unsportsmanlike conduct foul of the night. Snipes, then, will miss the first half of next week's game at Niskayuna. Isaiah Teabout, a senior transfer from Watervliet, finished the game for Shaker, and will start next week. Teabout led one final TD drive in the 4th quarter, capped by a 1 yard run by Dallas Hutziger to make the final score, 28-7.

Up next for Shen will be a road game at Guilderland. Shaker has to hope they can keep the momentum going vs. Nisky next week.

Other scores:

Gloversville 28, Amsterdam 24.

Glens Falls 42, South Glens Falls 12.

Scotia 36, Mohonasen 22.

Schuylerville 38, Camden 20.
