News & notes

The Albany Firebirds won't return to the reconstituted Arena Football League next season.

Given the league's troubles this year, it would appear that the 'Birds and a few other teams will seek their fortunes elsewhere. On his WOFX talk show Wednesday, Jeff Levack said that coach Damon Ware will return next season, and talked about the league's various in-season issues.

Update, 1:58 pm: The 'Birds will play in Arena Football 1. Former NFL coach Jeff Fisher will be part of the new league as well.

Speaking of WOFX, the station is the new local broadcast home for the Jets, beginning with Monday's game vs. San Francisco. If you're annoyed by Joe Buck on ESPN/ABC, mute the sound, and flip on Fox Sports Radio 980.

Unlike last year, Spectrum News 1 is not posting their Friday Night Matchup schedule this year. What we do know is that Class AA & Suburban Council rivals Shenendehowa & Shaker will open the season tonight. Kickoff will be around 7:10 pm.

Spectrum and the Albany Times-Union's James Allen is forecasting that LaSalle will finish 2nd in the Class A Capital Division behind Averill Park, and Troy will finish last. The Cadets have to replace 19 seniors who graduated, including superstar Matt Bott. Troy returns 6 two-way starters. Allen is predicting two wins for Troy, one of which would likely be tonight's home opener vs. Johnstown.

RPI opened their 2024 football season on a down note, getting blown out by Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 35-0, at East Campus Village Stadium on Thursday. This was not pretty.
