News & notes

We would be remiss if we did not note the passing of Ballston Spa athletic director Tony Sunkes, who passed away on Sept. 7 at 46. I'd imagine B-Spa schools, especially the high school, had their flags at half-staff this week.

We're hearing that threats being made against "outdoor activities" at Bethlehem High have something to do with the football team. Sounds to me like someone was not the least bit happy about something, like, perhaps, not making the team this season.

It's particularly galling given that it's been a week since there was a school shooting in the Atlanta suburbs, and the first thought that came to mind was that this might've been a copycat. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon.

An era is coming to an end at Shenendehowa.

According to the Albany Times-Union, the Clifton Park-based school district is dropping the "Plainsmen" as its team nickname, effective immediately, after old yearbook photos appeared in the newspaper depicting the team's former mascot, a depiction of a Native American, prompting immediate action.

Understandably, there are alumni and residents who are opposed to the change, which brings the district in line with other school districts that had to abide by a state mandate to remove Native American imagery deemed offensive, as well as team nicknames. For now, the school's teams will simply be known as "Shen" until a new nickname is determined.

To be continued, for sure.
