News & notes

Incoming Troy High men's basketball coach Jamil Hood, Sr. will be honored this evening in a ceremony at Jennings Landing, where he'll receive the Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service after his years as a coach, as well as CEO/President of Hood's House of Hoops in Albany. Congratulations to Coach Hood.

Former Albany Academy catcher Derek Bender slipped under the radar when he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins back in July as a 6th round pick out of Coastal Carolina. Bender had relocated to South Carolina for his senior season in high school after helping Albany Academy to back-to-back sectional titles in 2017-18.

Today, Bender is looking for a new gig.

The Twins cut Bender from their Fort Myers farm team Thursday after it was reported that he'd been tipping off opposing hitters during a Florida State League playoff vs. Lakeland on September 6. In 19 games with Fort Myers, Bender hit just .200 with 2 homers and 8 RBI. A far cry from his college numbers, where he had hit .326 for Coastal Carolina with 32 homers and 153 RBI over 3 seasons (2022-4).

Unhappy camper? Maybe. Bender told reporters he wanted the season to be over. With that attitude, I don't think he'll latch on with another club so soon. Anywhere.
