News & notes

 Politicians are athletes, too.

Assemblywoman Pat Fahy, an avid cyclist, will participate in the NY Bike Summit next weekend at the Albany Capital Center. Her work as an advocate for pedestrian and bicycle access earned her the Robin Dropkin Legislative Excellence Award on Tuesday.

Fellow lawmaker Phil Steck of Watervliet is sharing some of his past in a radio ad making the rounds.

Turns out Steck is the son of former Albany Academy football coach Ernie Steck, and even played for his father at Academy many moons ago. The ad runs several times a day on local radio.

Former Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim was in town on Wednesday to take part in a panel discussion with one of his former players, current Siena coach Gerry McNamara, at the Crowne Plaza-Desmond.

Former referee and LaSalle & Siena grad John Cahill, who retired from officiating in 2013, was also part of the panel, and had a reunion with Boeheim, 15 1/2 years after he officiated a 6 overtime Syracuse win over Connecticut in the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden. Today, Cahill is a supervisor of officials for the Big East.
