It seems only fitting that former NFL coach Jeff Fisher, who oversaw the collapse of the Arena Football League this summer, is now the commissioner of the new Arena Football One, rising from the ashes of the old league. The Albany Firebirds and the AFL's last champions, the Billings Outlaws, will lead the surviving AFL teams into AF1.
On the downside, expansion teams from Stockton, California and Monterrey, Mexico will have to wait until 2026 to start play as AF1 gets its collective sea legs under them.
Stay tuned.

There will be no volleyball state titles in Section II.
Pittsford Sutherland defeated Burnt Hills, 3-1, on Sunday at Cool Insuring Arena, denying the Spartans their 10th state title. Gary Bynom's club still owns Section II, so they'll be back. Meanwhile, Bynom now can concentrate on the women's basketball program, which shares some players with volleyball.

Mark Sausville is back for his 2nd tour of duty as men's basketball coach at Schenectady. The Patriots were contenders in the Suburban Council last year, and with the league now down one team with the defection of Troy to the Colonial Council, Schenectady should have a better chance to win another Gray division title.

UAlbany's trip to Puerto Rico ended on a down note Sunday, as the Danes saw their 5 game winning streak snapped by American University, 81-77. Justin Neely led Albany with 20 points, while Amare Marshall was held to just 4 points in 22 minutes. Albany is idle until Saturday, when they visit Big East power Georgetown (FS2, Spectrum channel 401, 4 pm).
