News & notes

They did everything but roll out the red carpet for incoming UAlbany football coach Tom Perkovich.

The school held a presser at Broadview Center, and lined up the cheerleaders on either side of the aisle to welcome Perkovich & his family.

Now, the job at hand for Perkovich, who said he was retaining about 50 players from the 2025 team, to get UAlbany back to the postseason.

Meanwhile, former coach Jared Ambrose claims he wasn't given a fair chance to succeed, and that AD Mark Benson had already announced a search for a coach prior to the Great Danes' win over Monmouth in the season finale in November. Benson isn't exactly a popular guy, as basketball fans will tell you, so maybe he'd be better served letting Perkovich settle in under his own terms.........

Belated congratulations to Tamarac men's basketball coach Eric Medved, who won his 200th game on Tuesday. Perfect timing, since the Bengals will be featured tomorrow night on WNYA vs. Saratoga Catholic (7 pm).

Troy High is looking for a new flag football coach after Frank Rogers, who founded the program, left to launch Union College's flag football program, which starts play next year. Talk about a tough act to follow.

Shaker welcomed back multi-sport star Melvin Brown on Tuesday, and he just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds in Tuesday's win over Ballston Spa. All that does is give the Blue Bison one more weapon on the court as they look to secure the Blue division title in the Suburban Council.
