News & notes

It shouldn't surprise anyone that MVP Arena is looking to host more NCAA post-season tournaments, be it hockey or basketball, after drawing a total of just under 13,000 fans over the weekend for the hockey regionals, half of that on Sunday, as Michigan advanced to the Frozen Four with a 5-3 win over Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs feature the likely #1 pick in the summer NHL draft in freshman Gavin McKenna, which might explain the larger than normal turnout.

UAlbany's women's lacrosse team dropped a non-league game to Boston University Monday, to the tune of 22-5. The Lady Terriers ran out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter, and never looked back. Ugh.

Troy High set a school record for points in flag football on Monday in blowing away Lansingburgh, 65-0. The Lady Horses (1-0) will travel to Albany on Thursday.

Unfortunately for Troy, the women's lacrosse varsity is still looking for their first win after dropping a 17-7 decision to Ballston Spa on Monday night. The men open play later today.

The rest of Monday's high school action:

Women's lacrosse:

Schuylerville 20, Scotia 5.

South Glens Falls 17, Amsterdam-Broadalbin-Perth 2.

Softball:

Hoosick Falls 5, Mechanicville 1.

LaSalle 3, Albany 0.

Tamarac 22, Waterford 0 (5 innings).

Greenwich 28, Cambridge 0 (5 innings).

Taconic Hills-Hawthorne Valley 6, Maple Hill 5.

Cobleskill-Richmondville 12, Johnstown 2.

Fort Ann 14, Bolton 10.

Hoosic Valley 10, Saratoga Catholic 6.

Schoharie 7, Northville 6.

Niskayuna 9, Cohoes 0.

Yes, there is such a place as Mudville, not just the one immortalized in Casey at The Bat. It's a small town in central NY, which hosted five non-league games on Monday. The scores:

Fonda-Fultonville 7, Mount Markham 5.

Fonda-Fultonville 4, Cazenovia 1.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain 10, Poland 0.

Mayfield 7, Poland 6.

Cazenovia 6, Mayfield 4.

The Albany Times-Union released its all star teams in bowling & hockey today, and, well, we wouldn't be surprised to read of some discord coming from either Troy (bowling) or LaSalle (hockey).

In the latter case, the Cadets' leading scorer, Danny Wiese, was named to the 2nd team. League champion Shenendehowa, understandably, placed 3 players on the 1st team. Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa coach Jim Buffaline was named Coach of The Year, and the Hawks' Camren Mance was named Player of The Year.

On the lanes, Troy was completely shut out. The only Colonial Council school recognized was Section II runner-up Lansingburgh, who placed senior Charles Hauser on the 1st team, and John Lynch on the 2nd team. Lynch is not the only legacy bowler on the 2nd team, as he's joined by Mike Scaccia, Jr. of CBA, who is only a sophomore. CBA's Dan Walsh was named Coach of The Year, and Guilderland's EJ Taber was named Player of The Year. Look, I get that Troy ran into a midseason slump, and it cost the Flying Horses some votes, but this reeks of political bias in favor of the Suburban Council, which dominated the 1st team, and had just 2 players on a more diversified 2nd team. Troy's Sophia Short, who bowls on the men's team instead of the women's team, wasn't even considered.

There's always next year.
