 The Daily Gazette is reporting today that the Hawks of the Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) will end their association with Union College after this season, and, like the Garnet Chargers, will play their home games at the new Mohawk Harbor Arena beginning in the 2025-6 season. Have to believe that the annual holiday tournament, which took place at Union's Messa Rink on December 20-21, will move to Mohawk Harbor as well.

Listeners to WROW might've been jolted Monday morning to find Ben Patten no longer reading sports scores on the station's morning show. As noted over at The Land of Whatever, Patten now shares the morning drive show with Jaime Roberts, under the title, The Magic Morning Show, in addition to adding a solo berth middays. Apparently, Albany Broadcasting suits are removing sports and lottery numbers from the equation in order to add more program content. Wouldn't be surprised at all if this results in a drop in ratings....

In posting the result of Troy's win over Schalmont in today's morning announcements at THS, coach Don Poutre said it was the team's 6th win of the season. What that would mean is that a match at Catholic Central that was cancelled last month ends up a forfeit for the Flying Horses, boosting their record to 6-4 overall (6-3 Colonial Council). We'll see if the two teams actually meet at Uncle Sam Lanes next week.

Troy High sports review, through January 3

 Swimming & bowling resume this week after the 2 week holiday break, while basketball continues.

Swimming & diving (unified team with CBA & Columbia):

Current record: 4-0.

The Flying Devil Brothers return to action Tuesday at Ballston Spa.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 5-1 (2-0 Colonial Council).

Jamil Hood's club made a 2nd half comeback count, and defeated Schenectady in overtime on Friday at the Riley Center. 

Next: LaSalle visits tomorrow night, and then, the Flying Horses pay their first visit to Cohoes on Thursday. No reason given for why the game was moved up a day. We're thinking there's some sort of scheduling conflict at Cohoes.

Bowling:

Current record: 4-4 (4-3 Colonial Council).

League play resumes today at Schalmont, and, then, it's a return to Uncle Sam Lanes for rematches with LaSalle (tomorrow) & Lansingburgh. Troy will be the home team Tuesday, and the visiting team on Thursday.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 4-4 (0-3 Colonial Council).

The Lady Horses were assumed to be a doormat in the Glens Falls Holiday Tournament on December 27-28. Will Harris and the ladies played like contenders in upsetting host Glens Falls, then destroying Foothills Council doormat Hudson Falls.

Next: The ladies make their first trip to McCormick Hall to find Kate Gilooly and LaSalle waiting for them tomorrow night. After that, Cohoes makes its first visit to Zotto Gym on Friday night.

News & notes

 It was a good Sunday for Albany Academy at Siena College.

First, the women's basketball team knocked the Academy of Holy Names out of the ranks of the undefeated, 71-45. Holy Names was held to just 15 points in the 2nd half.

Then, it was the men's turn to shine, as Academy defeated CBA in the nightcap, 67-39. We don't have attendance figures for the doubleheader at UHY Center, but even though CBA's fan base travels well, the cold weather may have kept some folks away.

24 hours after their women's team fell to Iona, Siena's men's team lost a heartbreaker to the Gaels, 74-73, in front of 5225 fans at MVP Arena in the 2nd of 10 games scheduled to air on WNYA. Niskayuna's Brendan Coyle led Siena with 20 points, while Major Freeman added 10, and Justice Shoats had 16. The Saints are idle until Friday, when they travel to Quinnipiac for a matinee at 2 pm.

For those of you reading the Albany Times-Union this morning, the times for LaSalle's men's basketball games this week are in reverse order.

As you already know, the Cadets' trip to Mechanicville on Friday to play Catholic Central is the WNYA game of the week at 7 pm (tip time closer to 7:05-7:10)., but is listed at its original starting time at 6:30. You'd think Rodger Wyland would've given James Allen, who visits with Wyland on Fridays on WTMM, a heads-up, but the T-U can't be bothered to correct their schedules at all.

Tuesday's game at Troy, listed as at 7, is actually at 6:30.

Some sad news to report.

Local hoops legend Barry Kramer, who later became a state Supreme Court judge, passed away over the weekend at 82. Kramer starred for Linton in the 60's, was drafted by the San Francisco (now Golden State) Warriors in 1964, and played 1 season with the Warriors & Knicks before retiring to go to law school.

During his off-time in 1965, Kramer was part of a local team that was sponsored at different times by Wedekind Motors and Schaefer Beer. He would return to the pros and play for the then-New York Nets during the 1969-70 ABA season.

Rest in peace.

 UAlbany's women's basketball team took down Lowell Saturday afternoon, 53-39. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) led Albany with 15 points, while Kaci Donovan & Kayla Cooper added 14 each. Meghan Huerter added 6. Abby Ray didn't score in limited court time.

Meanwhile, at Broadview Center, Byron Joshua led 4 Great Danes in double figures with 18 points, but it was not enough, as Lowell came away with a 73-69 victory.

 It wasn't so long ago that UAlbany had the son of former NFL quarterback Vinny Testaverde playing for the Great Danes. Now, it appears the son of another ex-NFL QB  is considering Albany.

Cole Pennington made a recruiting visit to Albany on Friday. He had followed the footsteps of his father, Chad, who starred for Marshall in the late 90's before being drafted by the Jets in 2000. Cole played three seasons for the Thundering Herd, but as a backup quarterback. Coincidentally, the elder Pennington would succeed Testaverde as the Jets' QB.

Siena opened its MAAC schedule, and with it, a 10 game slate of broadcasts on WNYA, with a double overtime thriller, defeating Manhattan, 103-95, before nearly 5000 fans at MVP Arena. Justice Shoats & Major Freeman led 5 Saints in double figures with 24 points each. Peter Carey added 21, and Gavin Doty finished with 19. Marcus Jackson (Albany Academy/UAlbany) chipped in with 10, while Brendan Coyle (Niskayuna) had 5.

The Saints will stay in town and host MAAC nemesis Iona tomorrow at 2 pm (WNYA, JAMZ 96.3).

In between Siena games, the Albany FireWolves will host Las Vegas in National Lacrosse League action tonight at 7 (WNYA, ESPN+). Vegas coach Shawn Williams will see a familiar face on the Albany side in the form of his son, Dyson, a rookie with the 'Wolves. The teams are also raising money for The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, and Albany's Melodies Center for Blood & Cancer Disorders at Albany Medical Center, to help Dyson's brother, Tucker, who died 2 1/2 weeks ago after a bout with Burkitt lymphoma.

 CBA honored former men's basketball coach Dave Doemel a week ago by christening the court at Ned McGraw Gym in his honor. One of Doemel's former players, Galal Cancer, in his first season as head coach, has the Brothers in contention in the Suburban Council.

You'll recall that Catholic Central similarly rechristened their court, now at the Riverside Center in Mechanicville, after local icon Don Bassett a few years back, and Troy High christened their gym in honor of former coach and athletic director Clem Zotto years earlier.

As MAAC league play begins for Siena, so also begins the Saints' TV schedule on WNYA (Spectrum channel 1215), as the Saints host Manhattan tonight at 7 (also on JAMZ 96.3 FM).

Meanwhile, Teresa Seppala continued her red-hot play of late, scoring 24 points to lead the Lady Saints past the Lady Jaspers, 62-60, Thursday, as Siena begins the league portion of the schedule with a win. Anajah Brown added 11 points, while Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) was held scoreless.
