With two weeks remaining in the Independent Collegiate Baseball League season, the championship is already decided.
The Albany Athletics swept the Glens Falls Independents, 5-0 & 2-1, Saturday at East Field. In Amsterdam, the Mohawks ended a 3 game losing streak, and may have helped the Athletics clinch the title by sweeping the Dutch, 5-1 & 5-2.
Standings:
Athletics 18-2-2.
Dutch 10-10-2.
Mohawks 8-11.
Independents 1-17.
The Athletics & Mohawks will play a single game tomorrow at Shuttleworth Park. Then, the Dutch return to Shuttleworth for a double-header on Wednesday. Amsterdam, then, will play a home & home series of doubleheaders with Glens Falls, as they'll make their last appearance in Glens Falls on Thursday, with the Independents coming to Amsterdam on Saturday. The Mohawks & Athletics will wrap Amsterdam's schedule on August 12.
The Athletics, the reigning Albany Twilight League champions, have a mix of semi-pro, collegiate, and former pros (i.e. Chris Salamida), something the other teams really can't match. The others, loaded with incoming collegiate players, are learning something this season. Which was the mission, anyway.
