News & notes

UAlbany has suspended men's basketball activities due to a recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases on campus. How long this will last, we don't know for sure, but this does put the Great Danes' participation in a pre-season tournament in jeopardy. We'll keep you posted.

Sackatoga Stables' Tiz The Law, after a 2 month layoff, will run in the Breeders' Cup Classic Saturday, where he is the early morning line favorite. Tiz The Law skipped last month's Preakness after losing in the Kentucky Derby in September. The Breeders' Cup actually starts today at Keeneland with 5 races, airing on NBC Sports Network and, locally, OTB-TV.

Troy High notes: Troy's women's soccer team snapped a season long winless streak Thursday night, shutting out Albany, 3-0. Cooper Murray had a pair of goals to lead the Lady Horses (1-6-1). Justin Haviland's club is hoping to take that momentum with them when they return to Picken Field tomorrow to play Shaker in a return match.

However, the Troy-Averill Park women's swimming & diving team dropped a close decision to Ballston Spa on Wednesday to drop to 2-3 on the season with 1 meet left, next Thursday vs. Bethlehem. A .500 record would be nice, wouldn't it?

Troy's bowling team will begin its season on November 30 at Bethlehem (match at Del Lanes), but a road trip to Averill Park has been pushed back 15 days from its original date of December 2 to December 17, due likely to a scheduling conflict. Meanwhile, Troy's basketball teams are awaiting clearance from the state before their season starts on December 4. We'll keep you posted on that as well.

Troy-CBA's men's swimming & diving schedule has 6 meets, but curiously missing is Albany, which will not field a men's team this year. The lineup:

December 22: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
January 5: Home opener vs. Bethlehem.
January 12: @ Ballston Spa.
January 19: @ Niskayuna.
January 21: Schenectady.
February 2: Senior day vs. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Coach Jeff Maxwell will be looking to build on last year's 7-1 ledger, as well as the improved performance of the women this season (see above).

We've obtained information on various meets/games from sites such as Capital Region Soccer and from the Albany Times-Union, as El Cheapo Media isn't even bothering to send anyone to cover Troy High sports anymore, unless Troy is competing against Shenendehowa, Saratoga, etc., since El Cheapo prefers to give Saratoga County priority these days.
