News & notes

Former Siena basketball star Jalen Pickett is moving up in class.

Pickett will play for Penn State next season after transferring from Siena following the 2020-1 season. What that means, of course, is that viewers will get to see more of Pickett, with Nittany Lion games airing on either ESPN's group of networks or Fox or its sister network, the Big 10 Channel, the latter of which, unfortunately, is a premium channel on Spectrum Cable.

Nice interview by Joyce Bassett of the Albany Times-Union with Pittsburgh senior Hunter Levesque (Troy) in today's edition. Hunter's parents and friends drove to Boston over the weekend to see her play against Boston College. The Panthers & Eagles split the four game series.

For the season, Levesque is hitting .266, with 4 homers & 19 RBI. Even though the NCAA has granted her a fifth year of eligibility because of COVID, Hunter has declined, and will graduate next month.

It's looking like Troy will be hosting the Class A Super Bowl vs. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on Friday. They're already setting up their YouTube stream for the game, four days before kickoff.

The numbers for Troy are staggering, as we've noted. After shutting out Queensbury in the semi-finals, the numbers break down like this:

Offense: 49.3 points per game.
Defense: 7.3 points allowed per game.

Burnt Hills also pitched a shutout on Friday, downing Averill Park, but it was not the dominating performance that Troy put on at home. The Spartans, however, have had Troy's number over the years.

Volleyball season is not over yet at Troy. It appears that they are doing a post-season tournament, with Troy's first game tomorrow vs. Albany in a rematch from March 30. Troy won its first match of the season that night, and so the Falcons return to the scene of the crime. Women's volleyball tournament pairings are not yet in the press. The men's tournament in the Suburban Council begins tonight.

It's better late than never, but LaSalle ran its record to 3-2 on Friday with a 14-0 win over Ballston Spa.

There is a change to Troy's lacrosse schedule.

The non-league match vs. Amsterdam, originally announced for May 1, has been moved to Friday, May 7. No reason given for the switch. This would've been the season opener for Troy, but now the opener is next Monday vs. Guilderland. Either way, Troy opens with a 3 game homestand.
