News & notes

Albany Academy thought they'd run the table in the Colonial Council this season.

LaSalle had other ideas.

The spring edition of the Battle of The Cadets was not the high scoring affair one might've expected of the top two teams in the league, as Academy suffered its first loss of the season, 7-1. LaSalle (9-2) is building momentum heading into the sectionals, which begin in about a week and a half.

The Tri-City Valleycats' 1st regular season game in the Frontier League followed a familiar script Thursday night in New Jersey.

Down 1-0 to Sussex County in the top of the 9th, the 'Cats plated two runs, then shut down the Miners in the bottom half to pick up a 2-1 win.

Trust me, the joint will be jumpin' next Friday night for the home opener at Bruno Stadium against the New Jersey Jackals.

Troy High snapped a 3 game losing streak in baseball, toppling Bethlehem by a 2-1 score. Chris Strack's club (7-4) visits Averill Park today---weather permitting, of course-----before returning home for Senior Day Wednesday vs. CBA. They'll close at Saratoga one week from tonight. Yep, it's a 7 pm game which will have trouble drawing even parents, since it's running opposite the Valleycats' home opener. As noted, the sectionals begin the week of June 7. Troy will be part of a star studded Class A field that also includes LaSalle, Averill Park, & Burnt Hills.

Bethlehem, on the other hand, dismantled Troy's hapless lacrosse squad, 20-0. Not all of the games have been reported to the press, as we've stressed, but Troy (0-9, 0-7 Suburban Council) could set a record for futility this season. Not so much the won-loss record, that's a given, but the fact that they haven't scored a goal this season. At all. And four games remain.

I wonder if they're handing out paper bags for anyone showing up at Picken Field.

Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson (4-1) will be on the mound for Atlanta vs. the Mets tonight. The game will be shown locally on WRGB, with a 7:10 first pitch. Anderson lost his only other start against New York last September, also at Citi Field.

Update, 5:02 pm.: Tonight's Mets-Braves game has been postponed due to rain in Flushing. No make-up date has been set as yet. Today's Troy-Avertill Park baseball & softball games have also been postponed, and will be played tomorrow at 1 pm. That forces Troy to postpone a non-league softball game vs. Cohoes, as league schedule takes precedence. With Troy traveling to Cohoes on Wednesday, a double-header now seems likely on the road.
