News & notes

Now we know why the Troy Fighting Irish have played home games at Watervliet High this summer.

Former QB-turned-coach Ryan Job is the new varsity football coach at Watervliet, and took the job during the "Fall II" season back in March. Part of the deal, apparently, and I'm probably wrong about this, was to have the Irish play their home games at 'Vliet this year, though one game was moved to the team's former home at Lansingburgh. We'll see if that holds beyond this year.

This morning, the Tri-City Valleycats are a 1/2 game behind Equipe Quebec for the Atlantic Division lead in the Frontier League after beating Sussex County, 6-4, on Tuesday. Today's game is questionable with rain in the forecast.

I'd say the 'Cats would have to run the table to win the division and/or have a chance at a Wild Card.

Last year, Troy High merged its women's swimming program with Averill Park. This year, the two Suburban Council schools are now joined by Tamarac, from the Wasaren League, as the 2021 season begins today at Shaker. The meet begins around 4:15 or 4:30 pm.

More & more schools are merging programs in various sports due to budget concerns. Kinda kills the idea of getting kids out to play.

Spectrum News announced Tuesday that Friday Night Matchup will return this season. Like a lot of Section II schools, Spectrum opted not to start the season with Week 0 last week, and the season opener on Friday is a crossover between Suburban Council rivals Shaker (Class AA) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (Class A). Kickoff will be around 7 pm. Set your DVR's.
