High School Fridays: Burnt Hills vs. Troy (women's basketball), 12/3/21

When Troy High entered the Suburban Council 6 years ago, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake was a league doormat in basketball. If Gary Bynon has his way, the women will be contenders for the Suburban Council Grey division title this year.

Utilizing a swarming, suffocating pressure defense that saw relentless double & triple teams on Troy ball handlers, the Lady Spartans dominated from the opening tap, and never trailed, blowing out Troy, 55-20, in the first game of the Averill Park Tip-Off Tournament, varsity division.

And if you think that's bad news for Troy, think again. Burnt Hills also won the junior varsity game, a low scoring affair itself, 27-7. Troy will play South Glens Falls in the consolation game of the JV tournament tomorrow, and likely will get the Bulldogs in the varsity consolation tournament, too.

It's one thing if you can use this swarming defense against Troy, likely to be a 2nd division team this season, but can the Lady Spartans do the same to the league's elite, like Saratoga, Shenendehowa, and Averill Park? We'll find out about the latter as early as tomorrow, it would appear.

In other action:

Bethlehem may be back among the elite in the Blue division of the Suburban Council after blowing out Ballston Spa, 74-47.

There won't be a state football champion in Section II after Chenango Forks got the better of Schuylerville again, 21-0, at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
