News & notes

Siena opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Friday at Times-Union Center. That was the good news. The bad? Another loss, this one in overtime to Manhattan, 77-72. The Saints (2-6 overall, 0-1 MAAC) were led by Aidan Carpenter & Colby Rogers with 12 points apiece. Next up is a road trip tomorrow to play St. Peter's.

One problem we had in watching Troy-Burnt Hills and Averill Park-South Glens Falls last night on YouTube is that AP's PA announcer couldn't be bothered to keep the mic turned on during the games. Same thing with the Bethlehem-Ballston Spa game. There, the Scotties had a student PA announcer who turned her mic off after the lineups were announced, which might've been just as well, given how Ballston Spa was reduced to kibbles & bits by the Eagles' defense.

We're expecting a little more professionalism when attending Troy's home opener vs. Colonie next week. Just sayin'.

That being said, the Albany Times-Union proves to be an useful tool in filling in the blanks in last night's report. Burnt Hills coach Gary Bynon had some friends, if you will, leading the Spartans' swarming defense. Callie Chevalier had 17 points, most of it on 3 pointers (she had 5). Grace O'Connor, not to be confused with the actress from Xena, Warrior Princess back in the day, had three treys as part of her 13 points. Carlie Rzeszotarski added 15. As you might expect, no Troy player cracked double figures. It's going to be a long season for Ryan Meikle's group. The two teams will meet again at Burnt Hills on December 14, so Meikle has 10 days to come up with a solution for the Spartans' defense.

Quinnipiac has RPI's number in hockey.

The Bobcats, whose women's team swept RPI earlier this season, brought their men's team to Houston Field House Friday, and shut out RPI, 2-0. They'll be at Union tonight, while RPI hosts Princeton, which lost in overtime to Union, 1-0.

The rest of Friday's action:

In what could be a preview of things to come in the Suburban Council's regular season, Averill Park will play Burnt Hills later today in the championship game of the annual tip-off tournament. Sean Organ's Warriors blew out South Glens Falls, 81-38.
