News & notes

 The Albany FireWolves needed to win to make the National Lacrosse League playoffs.

Mission accomplished.

The 'Wolves collected some payback on the New York Riptide in the home finale at MVP Arena on Saturday, winning by a final score of 17-9. Only the top 4 teams in the NLL reach the playoffs, and Albany will have a 3rd meeting vs. the top seeded Buffalo Bandits next Saturday. Joe Resetaritis led Albany with 5 goals. Buffalo swept the regular season series with Albany, but can they beat the suddenly hot 'Wolves a 3rd time?
==================================
Another night, another win for the Albany Patroons.

Will Brown's club had all five starters finish in double figures, led by Anthony Moe with 24 points, and AJ Mosby with 22, as the Pats took down Atlantic City, 99-83. The Patroons are on the road this evening at Connecticut, safely in 1st place in The Basketball League.

We would be remiss if we didn't bring up the fact that the New York Racing Association (NYRA) is looking at suspending trainer Bob Baffert for 2 years for using PED's on some of his horses. The California-based Baffert, a Hall of Famer, has had his career tarnished with the scandal, but one must wonder if he's not the only one. As of right now, it doesn't look like he'll be at Saratoga in July.
====================================
Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson pitched six strong innings Friday as the Atlanta Braves beat the Texas Rangers. Anderson gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6. Brother Ben is in the Rangers' minor league chain, but not yet major league ready, it seems.
=====================================
As we know, Stony Brook is leaving the America East Conference for the Colonial Athletic Alliance after this season. On Saturday, they did what they do best. Spoil the party for UAlbany.

The Seawolves defeated Albany in women's lacrosse, 16-5, in what is being billed as the last meeting between the in-state rivals. Something tells me that will not really be the case after all, if the State Universities agree to a series of non-league games.
=====================================
Not listed in the results of Saturday's action in the papers is a non-league men's lacrosse match between Troy High and Tamarac-Hoosick Falls. The game, played at Tamarac's Cropseyville campus, went to the Wildcats, 8-1. Troy has now lost 8 of their last 9, but have just 4 games left. For some reason, Suburban Council opponents Guilderland, Columbia, and Shenendehowa were taken off Troy's schedule this season, likely due to the number of non-league games. Troy has one non-league game left, Wednesday vs. Hudson Falls. After that, they'll have Niskayuna on Thursday, and Senior Day on May 10 vs. CBA, and close at Bethlehem on May 12.
