News & notes

518 Alumni Watch: Tommy Kahnle (Shaker), now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, nearly took the loss Wednesday in Pittsburgh after giving up 3 runs on just 2 hits with 2 strikeouts, as the Pirates broke a scoreless tie.

However, the Dodgers answered with three of their own in the top of the seventh, only for Daniel Hudson to give the lead back to the Pirates in the bottom half, as Pittsburgh won, 5-3. Why the Yankees let Kahnle go, I'll never know.

In Cincinnati, Jeff Hoffman (Shaker) pitched 2 innings, giving up just a run on two hits, the run coming on a Hunter Renfroe homer, his 2nd of the game. The Reds won, 14-11, and open a four game series at Pittsburgh tonight, while the Dodgers return home to open a 4-set with Philadelphia.

Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) went 5 1/3 innings against his childhood favorites, the Boston Red Sox, but didn't figure in the decision. Anderson gave up 3 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. The Braves walked off Boston, 5-3, to gain a split of the two game series. The teams will likely meet again at Fenway later this season.

It was what we all thought it would be. A battle of aces on Senior Day at Bethlehem High between the Eagles' Anna Cleary, one of three seniors honored Wednesday afternoon, and Troy's Olivia DeCitise, a junior.

Both went the distance. Clearly fanned 14, walked 2, but her defense failed her in the third inning, leading to consecutive triples by Olivia Ashline & Katie Pryor. DeCitise struck out 11, but walked 4, scattering 5 hits. Troy closes the regular season with a 13 game winning streak, winning their last 10 in Suburban Council play, 2-1. Sean Geisel's club (16-2 overall, 13-2 Suburban Council) is almost assured of at least one home game when the sectional pairings are announced next week.

Troy baseball snapped a 2 game losing streak, beating Bethlehem, 4-2, thanks in large part to senior stars Mike Kennedy & Austin Francis. Unfortunately, the score was not reported to the local papers in time for press time. Bethlehem salvaged the day by beating Troy in---what else?---tennis, 9-0.
