News & notes

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League has expanded this season to 16 teams, or, 2 divisions of 8 teams each.

With high school season over, the league standings are finally in the papers, and it shows that the Amsterdam Mohawks are off to an 8-0 start after beating the Albany Dutchmen Monday night, 8-1.

Jacob Lapham (Lansingburgh/HVCC) went four innings for the Mohawks, giving up a run on three hits while striking out six. Dan Keaney (Guilderland) started for the Dutchmen, going three innings, fanning three while giving up just 2 hits. The Dutchmen squandered an early 1-0 lead in the 4th, as the Mohawks scored three runs in the 6th inning, and five more in the 8th to keep their perfect record intact. The Mohawks stay home tonight to host Mohawk Valley, while the Dutchmen return to Keenholts Park in Guilderland to entertain Saugerties, also tonight.

According to LaSalle hockey coach Tim Flanigan, the Cadets will return to Frear Park this season, as soon as negotiations are completed to finalize a contract. Hudson Valley Community College is removing the ice from Conway Arena, as reported yesterday. Why? I don't know. Just a radical idea from HVCC administration.

Only a partial schedule has been released. The schedule has the home games at HVCC, but it can easily be adjusted to read Frear Park once the deal is completed. This schedule does not include the annual Plattsburgh/Beekmantown trip, which would be set for December 3-4, and the Mohawks tournament at Union College, which would be December 26-27.

This is the schedule that is already out:

December 12: CBA.
December 17: Bethlehem.
December 23: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa.
January 7: @ Albany Academy.
January 13: Shenendehowa.
January 14: Capital District Jets.
January 27: Saratoga.
January 28: @ Guilderville.
February 1: Queensbury.
February 10: Senior Night vs. Albany Academy.
February 11: @ Bethlehem.

More dates and games will be added.

Toronto pitcher Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth) pitched the 9th inning in the Blue Jays' 11-1 blowout over Baltimore Monday. Gage actually entered the game in the 8th, and finished the game, giving up 1 hit with 1 strikeout and a hit batsman.

Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) went just four innings for Atlanta vs. Washington on Monday, giving up four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three. Anderson didn't figure in the decision, as Atlanta ran their winning streak to 12 in beating the Nationals, 9-5.
