News & notes

A 19 year old hoopster from Hudson Falls turned himself in to the NY State Police on Monday in connection with an assault on a referee during a tournament game in Halfmoon 8 days earlier.

Unique Steele, identified by the Daily Gazette, but not by the Albany Times-Union was charged with disorderly conduct and misdemeanor assault, and will appear in Halfmoon Town Court next week. His team, the Saratoga Splash, have been permanently banned from the Impact Athletic Center, per its founder, Tom Huerter, Sr., who also said Impact is adding extra security for Zero Gravity's Coaches Against Cancer event this weekend.

Columbia alum Kevin Smith was sent down to Triple A Las Vegas by the Oakland A's on Tuesday. Smith has had his struggles on offense, batting under .200 for the season, and moving down to the minors will help him get some playing time.

While batting helmets with single flaps are common in the majors, the Frontier League, to better improve player safety, has had a rule in the books for years requiring flaps over both ears.

Tri-City Valleycats infielder Juan Severino found this out the hard way Tuesday, and it cost the team manager Pete Incaviglia, when Incaviglia was ejected in the 2nd inning of what would be a 7-6 loss to the New Jersey Jackals. The umpires have been given a directive by the league that all batters have to have 2 flaps on their helmets, instead of one.

Just another adjustment for the 'Cats, who've now lost five of their last six.
