News & notes

 Jamel Horton, previously with UAlbany, will transfer to Mississippi State of the SouthEastern Conference (SEC) to use his final year of eligibility in the 2022-23 season. Horton is figuring on increasing his chances in the 2023 NBA draft by playing in one of the "Power 5" conferences, and it's well known, of course, that players from mid-major schools like UAlbany usually get shafted. We'll see Horton on the SEC Network, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU next season.

Shenendehowa product Ian Anderson gave up 5 runs on 10 hits with 9 strikeouts and a walk, and Atlanta's offense did the rest, as the Braves beat Colorado, 13-6, in Denver. As you might expect in the thin air of Denver, Anderson's ERA took a hit, as it jumped to 4.70 after giving up 2 home runs in his six innings.

Atlanta picked up a game on the first place Mets, who lost, 2-0, to the Los Angeles Dodgers, ending a 6 game winning streak. Former Shaker standout and Yankee Tommy Kahnle now pitches for the Dodgers, but didn't see action on Thursday.

Entering play on Thursday, Troy High's softball team was ranked #2 in the state. Imagine what'll happen if they run the table and win the state championship.

Sean Geisel's Flying Horses made it 2-for-2 at Luther Forest in Malta, needing just 5 innings to crush Massena, 16-1. Six runs in the first, highlighted by Gianna Barringer's 1st career grand slam, were all Olivia DeCitise needed. The junior ace fanned 13, and survived taking a comebacker off her stomach in the 4th inning, this after getting hit by a pitch while batting earlier in the game.

Next stop is Carrier Park in East Syracuse on Saturday, where Section III champ New Hartford awaits. Before that, DeCitise will in fact throw out the first pitch at Bruno Stadium tonight prior to the Tri-City Valleycats game vs. Trois Rivieres.

Class B champion Ichabod Crane has done Troy one better, as they're already the #1 team in the state, and showed why in shutting out Peru, 12-0. The game ended after six innings, as the Lady Riders added runs in the home 5th inning. Kari Graziano twirled a 4 hitter, and struck out 10. Ichabod Crane will travel to SUNY-Potsdam Saturday to play undefeated Canton.
=============================================
Speaking of the Valleycats, they split a doubleheader vs. Sussex County on Thursday at The Joe.

Tri-City got home runs from Brad Zunica, Juan Santana, Juan Silverio, and Willy Garcia to put down the Miners, 10-4, in the opener. Sussex County came back to salvage the nightcap, 6-2.
==============================================
More Troy High: Alex Ordonez was one of the few bright spots for Troy's outdoor track team, and he won a qualifier in the high jump in state competition at Shenendehowa on Thursday with a jump of 6 feet, 2 inches. State championships will be decided at Cicero-North Syracuse next weekend.
