News & notes

There will not be a state title in men's lacrosse in Section II.

Class C champion Burnt Hills was overpowered and outplayed by Manhasset on Wednesday night at Casey Stadium on the UAlbany campus, 16-5. The Spartans trailed, 10-2, at halftime, and never really got back in the game.

The women's squads from both schools meet at SUNY-Cortland tomorrow.

The Washington Wild Things walked off the Tri-City Valleycats in 10 innings, 4-3, on Wednesday. The 'Cats got homers from Carson McClusker, Juan Silverio, and Brantley Bell, but the usually dependable closer, Trey Cochran-Gill, ended up with the loss after his wild pitch plated the winning run in the 10th.

While Tri-City finishes their series tonight in Pennsylvania, the 518 Futures game, scheduled for Bruno Stadium, could wind up rained out if today's forecast remains accurate. It's been raining off and on this morning, and thunderstorms are on the docket for this afternoon.

Atlanta's Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) picked up his 5th win of the year Wednesday, going six innings in beating Oakland, 13-2. Anderson gave up both Oakland runs, walked two, and struck out six while scattering six hits over the six innings. Kevin Smith (Columbia) was inserted into the game by Oakland manager Mark Kotsay as a pinch-hitter for Elvis Andrus in the 8th inning, but went 0-1, lowering his season average to .188. I've a feeling they'll send him to the minors soon.

Liz Kuhlkin (Schalmont) won her third pro bowling title Wednesday, capturing the PWBA Long Island Classic. Kuhlkin ran the table in the stepladder format TV finals. Have to believe a certain two sport star at Troy High was watching, as Olivia DeCitise has made it known she's interested in going to Nebraska, where Kuhlkin bowled in college.

It used to be that Saratoga Splash was a brand of flavored water.

The Splash are an AAU team that got headlines today for the wrong reasons, as an unnamed player assaulted a referee after a game that the Splash lost on Sunday at Halfmoon as part of the Zero Gravity event. The cowardly cager ran off before he could be disciplined. Seems the Splash are the bad boys of local AAU.
