News & notes

Siena's women's basketball team got back on the winning track Saturday, as they downed Dartmouth, 75-67. Elisa Mevius had a career & season high 17 points to lead the Lady Saints.

Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) added 16 points, while Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) had 12. The Lady Saints continue their homestand Monday vs. Binghamton. Siena improves to 4-4 on the season overall.

Across the river in Troy, UAlbany fell to Cornell, 53-45. Helene Hagerstrand led Albany with 12 points. Grace Heeps (Columbia/UMass) added 10, and Lily Phillips (Cambridge) added 8. Abby Ray (Saratoga) went scoreless in 14 minutes. The Lady Danes travel to New Hampshire to play Dartmouth Tuesday afternoon.

Last year, Troy High finished 3rd in the Averill Park Tip-Off tournament. This year was worse.

The Flying Horses (0-2) didn't get blown out of the gym again, but they finished last after losing to Columbia, 44-36. Host Averill Park won the tournament, of course, disposing of South Glens Falls in the title game. The Junior Varsity tournament played out the same way, with the Warriors winning the tournament, and Troy finishing last. Troy opens league play Tuesday at Colonie before the home opener on Friday vs. Burnt Hills.

Update, 9:56 pm: We're finding out now that Sarah Fullmer is not the new head coach. Instead, the school stealthily brought in Steve Lombard as the new head coach.

Section II came away empty-handed in football this season.

Cambridge-Salem was blasted, 63-20, by Tioga, which retains the Class D state title. Tioga kept Cambridge-Salem off the board until two garbage time touchdowns in the 4th quarter.
