News & notes

 21 years. 10 Section II Class A titles. 1 state championship (2012).

Matt Shell, already in the Capital District Football Hall of Fame, has closed his resume.

Shell announced his retirement as head football coach at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Sunday at the team's annual post-season awards banquet. The news was made public on Monday. This will give Burnt Hills time to choose a successor, either someone currently on staff, or from the outside.

Thanks for the memories, Matt. God bless you on the next phase of your life.

We're learning more about Steve Lombard, the new women's varsity basketball coach at Troy High.

Lombard is known around the area as an AAU coach, and is working with a relatively young team with few returnees from last year's squad. Currently, Troy is 0-2 heading into their Suburban Council opener tonight vs. Colonie.

After two injury plagued seasons in Los Angeles with the Dodgers, maybe what Tommy Kahnle needs is a little home cooking.

The Shaker High graduate is returning to the Yankees on a 2 year free agent contract worth $11.5 million. The Yankees could use the veteran help out of the bullpen as Kahnle begins his 2nd tour of duty with the Yankees. It had been reported that the arch-rival Boston Red Sox were interested in Kahnle as well. As long as he's healthy, he can help the Yankees in the late innings.
