News & notes

 Siena College's women's basketball team took one on the chin at Iona on Thursday in a brunch special (11 am tip), 91-64. Anaja Brown led Siena with 16 points. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) added 13, and Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) chipped in with 9.

In the lone Section II sectional basketball game Thursday, Cohoes defeated Mekeel Christian, 54-29, in a Class B play-in game, and now will move on to play Albany Academy on Saturday.


In hockey news, Section II has decided to have all three play-in games take place on Monday.

In addition to LaSalle hosting the Guilderville Storm at Frear Park (3 pm), CBA will play host to the Mohawks at 2:15, and Albany Academy will try to spoil things for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa, with a 3:35 pick drop. The winners of Monday's games will be matched with Bethlehem, Adirondack, & Shenendehowa, respectively.

A quick reminder that tonight's Siena-Quinnipiac game at MVP Arena will tip at approximately 9:05 pm to accomadate ESPNU (Spectrum channel 370), which is carrying the game. WROW morning host Ben Patten didn't get the memo, and has been telling his listeners all through his show that the game is set for a 7 pm tip. Pre-game show will be on ALT 104.9 around 8:30 pm.

Some sad news from the world of horse racing.

Hall of Fame trainer John Veitch passed away earlier this week at 77. Veitch's best known runner was Alydar, who was a bridesmaid to Affirmed in the 1978 Triple Crown series, but gained a measure of revenge that summer, when Affirmed was DQ'd in the Travers at Saratoga.
