News & notes

 To borrow from AA Milne, now we are six, as in, six Section II basketball teams still vying for state titles. Four women's teams and two men's teams remain heading into the state semi-finals next weekend at Hudson Valley Community College (women) and Cool Insuring Arena (men).

Saturday's results:

Men's quarterfinals:

Class AA:

Liverpool 65, Green Tech 49. Henry Jenkins led the Soaring Eagles with 10 points. No one else on Green Tech reached double figures.

Class B:

Catholic Central 72, Potsdam 34. Balanced scoring carried the day for the Crusaders. Conor Gemmill led with 12 points, and Darien Moore had 11.

Class C: 

Canton 64, Chatham 59. 

Class D: 

North Warren 64, Schroon Lake 59. Sean Evans had a game high 26 points to lead North Warren back to Glens Falls.

Next Saturday at Cool Insuring Arena:

Catholic Central vs. Southampton, 9 am.

North Warren vs. Chapel Field Christian Academy, 12:30 pm.


Women's quarterfinals:

Class AA: 

Liverpool 56, Albany 51. Shonyae Edmonds had a game high 21 points in a losing effort for Albany.

Class A:

Averill Park 64, Indian River 38. HVCC has been like a 2nd home to the Warriors, who never trailed. Taylor Holohan led all scorers with 30 points.

Class B:

Albany Academy 62, Saranac 37. Saige Randolph led the Bears with 14 points. Brenna Ducatte led all scorers with 17 points for Saranac.

Class C:

Greenwich 60, Canton 32. The Witches led, 23-10, at halftime. Brooke Kuzmich was the leading scorer with 26 points.

Class D:

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 37, Seton Catholic 30. Mia'Rose Wylie led the Golden Knights with 11 points.

Friday at Hudson Valley:

Averill Park vs. Walter Panas, 3:15 pm.

Albany Academy vs. Putnam Valley, 11:45 am.

Saturday at Hudson Valley:

Greenwich vs. Millbrook, 2:15 pm.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons vs. Oxford Academy, 10:45 am.

Siena College has had a bad week.

First, baseball coach Tony Rossi stepped down ahead of his planned retirement date of March 20.

Then, the basketball teams were eliminated within 24 hours of each other in the MAAC tournament in Atlantic City.

The baseball team has lost the first two games of their series at Florida, 3-2 on Friday, 11-0 in a 7 inning game on Saturday, extending the current losing streak to 3 games. Today's getaway day game will be seen on the SEC Network+. which may or may be airing on cable, at 1 pm.

Luckily, the softball team is idle until Friday, March 18.

Men's lacrosse:

Maryland 16, UAlbany 9.
Roberts Wesleyan 17, St. Rose 8.
Siena 11, Sacred Heart 8. Well, at least there is some gold at the end of the week's rainbow for the Saints.

MIT 14, RPI 10.
Union 21, Emerson 8
SUNY-Cobleskill 23, Eastern Nazarene 7.

Women's lacrosse:

Russell Sage 19, Castleton 8.

Softball:

St. Rose split a doubleheader, losing to Pelican, 9-5, before coming back to beat Bloomfield, 3-2.

Men's volleyball:

Russell Sage lost a pair of matches, shut out by Nichols and Emerson in straight sets each.

The Albany Patroons are enjoying their first trip to Canada this season.

The team finishes a 3 game weekend sojourn north of the border today at Academie Alma. The TBL is streaming the game for free at 3 pm. Albany has won 3 in a row.

However, the Great White North wasn't too kind to the Albany Firewolves, as they dropped a 11-6 decision to Toronto. The 'Wolves return home for Star Wars night on March 25.
