News & notes

Aside from the Adirondack Thunder of the East Coast Hockey League, hockey season is over in the 518.

Local high school & college teams went 0-4 on Saturday, seeing their seasons end in miserable fashion.

In the 1st round of the ECAC playoffs, Princeton avenged a loss last weekend by shutting out Union, 3-0. Yale continued its mastery of RPI with a 4-1 win at the Houston Field House.

On the high school side, Queensbury, in division 2, was shut out by Saranac, 3-1, hours after Bethlehem saw its season end in a 4-0 loss to Suffern. Another year, another Section II champion going out in the 1st round of state play. Not even hosting the game could change Section II's fortunes.

Of course, there's always next year.

Championship weekend ends today at Cohoes High with the Class CC/C unification game between Duanesburg and Chatham. The Eagles & Panthers have a very tough act to follow after four rocket buster games on Saturday in Glens Falls.

That quadruple-header had the game times moved back due to weather, but the action was hot nonetheless.

North Warren won the Class D title, downing Northville, 46-33, pulling away in the 2nd half.

In the opener on Saturday, Catholic Central, which hadn't won a sectional title since 1981, when the legendary Don Bassett was still the coach, beat homestanding Glens Falls, 73-59. Darien Moore led the Crusaders with 27 points. Catholic Central, while their campus is now in Latham, still plays their home games at Monsignor Burns Gym on 114th Street & 7th Avenue, and was a member of the now-defunct Big 10 when they last won a sectional crown.

Troy High won its 3rd Class A title since entering the Suburban Council in 2015, going to double overtime before putting away top-seeded Amsterdam, 72-68. Three titles with three different coaches (Richard Hurley, Greg Davis, John Killian), and, counting a Class AA title 10 years ago, it's 4 titles in 10 years. Troy, in fact, didn't win the Grey division this time, unlike in 2016 & 2019, when they parlayed the division title into a sectional title.

8th grade phenom Stetson Merritt led the way with 23 points. Terrance Clark added 22, and Steven Foust had 10. Caesar Thompson led Amsterdam with 17 points, while Jhai Vellani added 14.

Green Tech repeated as Class AA champions, beating CBA for the 2nd straight season, 72-36. The Brothers had avenged last year's loss two months ago, but were blown right off the court. Green Tech led, 41-19, at halftime, and were never threatened in the second half to claim their 3rd title.

Siena College's men's basketball team will limp into the MAAC tournament in Atlantic City on a 5 game losing streak after dropping a 73-72 overtime decision to St. Peter's on Saturday. Their first tournament game is Thursday night vs. Niagara.

In contrast, the Lady Saints enter the post-season with momentum after blowing out Canisius, 76-58. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) had 15 points in support of leading scorer Emina Selimovic, who had 22. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) chipped in with 7 points. Siena's first tournament game will be against Fairfield Thursday afternoon.
