News & notes

The Tri-City Valleycats got their season off to a fast start, disposing of Tres Rivieres, 11-4, on Friday at Bruno Stadium. The two teams will meet again tonight at 6:30 pm. Starter Dwayne Marshall came over from Sussex County, and picked up the win.

You'll notice there are no high school scores in today's papers. Space limitations, coupled with the fact that baseball & softball games were all non-league affairs, contributed to the lack of results. Hence, we won't know for a couple of days how Troy fared, for example, vs. Shaker on the road in their season finale.

What we do know, though, is that Troy softball has momentum going into the sectionals, which begin Wednesday. Olivia DeCitise struck out 16 for the 2nd straight game, homered for the 2nd straight game, and Troy downed Guilderland, 4-3. Troy finishes the regular season at 16-4 overall (10-3 Suburban Council), and assured of a top 5 seed in Class A, maybe a top 3.

It was not a good day for Guilderland, as their baseball team wasted a 4-0 lead against Massapequa, which scored 10 unanswered runs in the 4th through 6th innings to upset the Dutchmen, 10-4. The video has been pulled by YouTube due to the use of copyrighted music.

The Albany Patroons thought they had another one in the bag at home against Reading Friday at the Armory. Nope.

The Rebels stormed back to hand Albany its 2nd straight loss, 113-111. The Pats begin a home & home series with Montreal tomorrow, with the 2nd half of the series next Friday at the Armory. Reading moves into 1st place with the win.
