When Jordan Canzeri, the prodigal son, was hired as varsity football coach at Troy High this summer, fans & alumni assumed the Flying Horses were ready for the next step to get back to the post-season, after just mssing the playoffs due to tiebreakers last year.
As ESPN's Lee Corso is wont to say, "not so fast, my friends".
Troy is 0-2 after South Glens Falls avenged a loss last year in spoiling Canzeri's home debut Friday night, 38-22. With the October 27 home game vs. Albany off the board now, meaning a crossover game is likely, Troy faces a virtual murderers row the next five weeks. They're at Columbia next week, followed by back-to-back home games vs. LaSalle & Bethlehem, then back on the road at Amsterdam & Averill Park.
So what's gone wrong?
If I could hazard a guess, since I wasn't there last night, I'd say the main issue is the defense, which has allowed 93 points in 2 games, or 46.5 points a game. Ugh. No one wants Troy to revisit the bad old days again. 1-7 two years ago is a reminder of those dark times.
I don't know what system Canzeri is using, but one sure way to turn things around is to see if he can reach back to his own playing days, and utilize what Jack Burger taught him. I don't think Troy wants to keep the revolving door moving, either.

Meanwhile, Troy volleyball, playing on back-to-back nights, hosted Amsterdam Friday night, and ran their winning streak to 3 in a row, beating the Lady Rams in 4 sets.
And there are signs of life elsewhere.
Troy's golf team has won two matches in a row, besting Niskayuna & Schenectady this week. Troy (2-5) has already seen Kolin & Kayne Behan qualify for next month's sectionals, and we're now at the halfway point in September!
While we don't know if the men's soccer team got off the schneid Thursday at Schenectady, the women sure did, picking up their first win over the equally luckless Lady Patriots. Today's matches vs. Catholic Central (women) & Amsterdam (men) were postponed at the last minute, as reported yesterday. Dare we suspect COVID?
Women's tennis & the cross country teams have also struggled, but results never appear in the paper.
Troy's unified women's swimming & diving team, combined with Averill Park & Tamarac, is 2-0 after beating Saratoga on Wednesday. A perfect regular season is not out of the question. Yet.
Now, if only the momentum of the golf & volleyball teams could rub off on the football team yesterday....
