News & notes

The College of St. Rose's women's soccer team has hit #1 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) poll released Tuesday.

The Golden Knights (9-0-1 Northeast 10, 15-0-1 overall) moved up two spots from #3 last week after disposing of league rivals Pace & New Haven. The previous #1, Catawba, saw their hope of an undefeated season end one week ago in a loss to Georgia College. St. Rose hosts Adelphi later tonight.

Army's women's soccer team won the Patriot League title, and will open tournament play vs. Colgate on Thursday. One big reason for the Black Knights' success is sophomore midfielder Brigid Duffy (Queensbury), who has 6 goals and 3 assists for Army (6-2-1 league, 9-6-3 overall).

Prior to last Friday's Class A quarterfinals, a group of parents from LaSalle, upset over the Cadets' expulsion from the tournament over a relatively minor violation of an obscure rule, filed suit in an 11th hour attempt to force Section II to reverse field. As we know, that went nowhere. Attorney Phil Steck of Watervliet, who has also been a state assemblyman, filed the suit last Thursday. However, judge Laura Jordan declined to hear the case on the day of the playoffs.

Now, however, we're learning that LaSalle had reached a compromise with Section II, which had threatened a full ban from post-season competition. Remember, LaSalle's women's soccer team had been cited for using ineligible players.

But you couldn't tell that to parents of the football players. Those parents felt the Cadets were screwed over, but only because they didn't have all the details before them. They acted on blind emotion in filing the suit. LaSalle was placed on 3 years probation.

Speaking with the Albany Times-Union, Steck said that normally, a forfeit would've been warranted for the use of an ineligible player, as happened to the women's soccer team last year in the 1st round of sectionals. Judge Jordan declined to hear the suit because the school had reached an agreement with Section II.
