News & notes

The College of St. Rose's women's basketball team ended their final season on a losing note, falling, 52-47, to Daemen in the NCAA Division II East Regional on Saturday. Kaela Carter led the Knights with 16 points, followed by Payton Graber (Schalmont) with 14.

So, what happens next?

Certainly, there'll be a bidding war for Will Brown's services. The veteran coach, in his 1st---and seemingly only---season coaching women, took a team that was picked to finish near the bottom of the Northeast 10, and took them to the post-season. He brought Graber over from Hudson Valley Community College, Syrita Faraj from Russell Sage, and Maddisyn Mahoney from Fairleigh Dickinson, for starters, to build the core of his roster. Those three, plus the rest of the team, will be transferring elsewhere for next season.

There had been whispers that Brown would likely head to Siena next to replace Carmen Maciariello, but that remains to be seen.

And while they were passing out the Kleenex at Bentley University, there was likely a box being passed around at HVCC for Albany Academy's Bears after the Class B champions fell to Notre Dame-Utica, 55-51. Albany Academy only has one senior, Bella Vincent, meaning the core of the Bears will remain intact for next season.

Seems there's some pushback to changing the annual Run For Women into the "Delightful Run For Women".

In today's Albany Times-Union, reader Alison Walsh of Albany finds the name change appalling, and, while acknowledging what has been written here previously, that the name change is an "attempt" to give the race more national exposure, but accuses the organizers of putting corporate profit over the race and the city. In her anger, Ms. Walsh forgets that "Delightful", as in, Sara Lee Delightful bread, is part of the same corporate conglomerate that purchased Freihofer's years ago. The question remains as to whether or not Ms. Walsh, a competitor in this race for years, will be at the starting line this year. Stay tuned.
