News & notes

High school basketball is over in Section II, but there's more hoops coming.

The final tally for Section II in 2024 is 5 state titles. 4 in men's basketball, 1 for the women (Catholic Central).

Northville, the last Section II team in women's action in a final, fell to defending champion Hammond Central, 54-34, at Hudson Valley Community College on Sunday. Coach Jim Zullo admitted that the Falcons' lack of varsity experience, with just 1 senior leading a roster of underclass-women, was a factor in the loss to the Red Devils, who repeated as champs for the first time in 17 years.

Over in Glens Falls, Section II swept the Sunday doubleheader.

Green Tech, which won the last 2 Class AA titles, won the 1st Class AAA title, upsetting Bay Shore, 79-63. Bay Shore, like the Averill Park women on Friday at HVCC, saw their hope for a perfect season come to a crashing end.

In the nightcap, North Warren defeated top-ranked Sackets Harbor, 68-66, withstanding a late rally from the Patriots.

The other common thread? Upstate NY 2, Long Island 0.

Congratulations to all of our Section II state champs.

The NCAA women's super-regional rolls into MVP Arena next week, loaded with star power. We think.

The top seeds in the regional, including defending champion LSU, will play at home this week, needing to win in order to advance to Albany. The super regional field also includes the top seeds on both sides of the bracket, South Carolina and Iowa. For Albany fans, this could be their only chance to see Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark, who has declared for the WNBA draft.

The women's super regional at MVP Arena will be March 29-April 1.
