News & notes

There's still some basketball to be played for UAlbany's women after all.

Coach Colleen Mullen and the Lady Danes will be on the road at Colgate on Thursday in the 1st round of the Women's NIT. Both teams were granted automatic qualifiers, and, although Albany had the better record, they're on the road against Colgate, the runner-up in the Patriot League.

A win Thursday means a 2nd round meeting with Providence (Big East), for whom Meghan Huerter (Shenendehowa) played before transferring to Albany.

Unfortunately, as of now, none of the early round games will have any television coverage. You could check Colgate's website to see if the game is being streamed on Thursday. Tip time is scheduled for 6 pm. The semi-finals & finals will air on CBS Sports Network (Spectrum channel 315) April 2-6.

An indicator of how bad things went for Siena this season is the fact that when the transfer portal opened Monday, Michael Eley and Zek Tekin entered it. Both had to deal with injuries this season, Eley more so than Tekin, and those injuries were a big reason why Siena ended the season 4-28. Freshman Max Frazier, who didn't see the court much this season, also went into the portal, perhaps unhappy with the lack of playing time.

There will be a pool on how long before UAlbany's Jonathan Beagle re-enters the portal....

If you don't already have tickets for the NCAA women's super regional at MVP Arena March 29-April 1, you're already SOL.

MVP Arena GM Bob Belber expects the downtown venue to be sold out all four days--yes, they'll play on Easter Sunday--and they'll open the upper bowl in the arena, meaning as many as 14,000 people for each day.

Ticketmaster, the NCAA's official ticketing partner, is already listing resale tickets for March 30 in the lower bowl in the range of $344-$1300. Upper bowl seats, particularly in the 4 corners, are running at $215 each.

All of this is in anticipation of Iowa and its superstar, Caitlin Clark, coming to town. Fans expecting Connecticut to return to Albany were disappointed when the Lady Huskies were sent west to Portland, and reportedly are selling the tickets they bought for Albany.

You can imagine the restaurants & hotels in the area will also benefit......

Today's UAlbany men's lacrosse match vs. Virginia will air on the ACC Network (Spectrum channel 388) at 4 pm. The Great Danes have won 2 straight, but they're playing the #3 team in the country as of now.
