News & notes

At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Siena AD John D'Argenio said the school was looking to hire an outside consulting firm to help them search for their next coach.

WNYT's Rodger Wyland, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, doesn't think that's the answer. Long the voice of UAlbany basketball & football, Wyland is touting Will Brown as the next coach, adding credibility and credence to the rumors that have circulated since former coach Carmen Maciariello was given the vote of confidence by D'Argenio last month.

Speaking of UAlbany, star guard Amar'e Marshall has followed Jonathan Beagle into the transfer portal. Marshall was 2nd on the Great Danes in scoring at 16.7 points per game, behind leading scorer Sebastian Thomas.

Over at Siena, in addition to Mason Courtney entering the portal, three more Saints followed. Redshirt sophomore Giovanni Emejuru, sophomore Sveinn Birgisson, and freshman walk-on Carson White, a forward. In this case, I'd think they're pressing the panic button too soon, not waiting for school administration to find a new coach.

Meanwhile, Ahniysha Jackson will use her final year of eligibility next season at Siena, after seeing five teammates, and one that didn't play at all, use the portal earlier this week. The Albany High grad will graduate in May, but will be back in the lineup this winter.

If you were planning on traveling to Lowell, Massachusetts, to see UAlbany's softball team take on UMass Lowell, with Troy High grad Olivia DeCitise in her first season in Lowell, you're going to have to wait a bit.

This weekend's games have been postponed due to the threat of a post-season winter storm due to hit the northeast on Saturday. Two of the three games will be made up as a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3.

As of right now, the men's baseball series at Lowell is still on, with a doubleheader Friday and a single game on Sunday.

The NCAA men's basketball tournament goes to the field of 64 today (check listings), and at least one local player will see some spotlight.

Albany Academy grad August Mahoney is a senior at Yale, which will play its first game Friday afternoon in Spokane, Washington, vs. Auburn of  the SEC (TNT, approximately 4:15 pm).
