Spectrum News 1's High School Game of The Week (formerly Friday Night Matchup, that title hasn't been used in a few years) began the 2025 season tonight with a battle of Knights.
Averill Park, now in Class B in football, hosted Lansingburgh, but you have to wonder if, other than the BEDS system, there is a real reason why AP is in Class B in the first place.
The Golden Knights won the toss, and deferred to the 2nd half. They then proceeded to bully the Knights of North Troy virtually the entire night, forcing three turnovers.
After a scoreless first quarter, Philemon Noi, an emigre from Ghana who was recruited by coach Zach Gobel in gym class, ran it in from 3 yards out. Noi would also be tried out as a placekicker, and made 1 of 2 PAT attempts in the 2nd half. Later in the frame, Mason Phelps, Jacob's brother, wearing his big bro's #28, hauled in his first touchdown from 38 yards, but the extra point was not good, and AP went into the break with a 13-0 led.
Spectrum's graphics department was late to the party, as all that was missing was the usual scoreboard bug on the bottom of the screen, as the graphics otherwise began appearing at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Braeden Kilgallon (brother Blake was a quarterback last year), after having a TD run and a Pick 6 taken away by penalties, finally made one count, as he rambled 59 yards to paydirt. It was 20-0 at that point. Averill Park was driving again at the end of the frame, and, so, on the first play of the 4th quarter, QB Tyler Bradley kept it himself from a yard out. The PAT failed, so it was 26-0. On Lansingburgh's next possession, Griffin Baker got a Pick 6 from 58 yards. Noi added the extra point to make in 33-0.
With under 2 minutes to go, Averill Park poured salt on the wounds, as Eli Amadon, Jr. scored the final touchdown of the game. Noi missed the extra point, and, so, your final score is 39-0. In all, the Golden Knights had three touchdowns called back by penalties.
Next week: Averill Park will get a reality check as it faces Ravena. Lansingburgh will meet Green Tech. Spectrum's cameras will be in Niskayuna, as they'll host Shenendehowa.
