News & notes

Siena's women's basketball team is still looking for their first win of the season after losing at home on Tuesday, 71-63, to North Dakota.

The Lady Saints never led in the game. Amari Anthony led all scorers with 22 points for Siena, followed by Rayshel Brown with 19. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) saw limited time, and finished with 2 points. The homestand continues Thursday vs. Colgate.

Meanwhile, the Siena men won their 2nd game in the last three, besting Army, 83-67. It was a homecoming of a different kind for Siena president and former Congressman Chris Gibson. Gibson taught at West Point in the 90's before starting his political career. Colby Rogers led Siena with 18 points, and Anthony Gaines added 16 for the Saints, who open conference play Friday at home against Manhattan.

There have been blowouts in high school & college that have drawn criticism because of the lopsided scores and the quality of opponents. Most of these are in other parts of the country, not in upstate NY. Until Tuesday.

Tamarac opened its season by destroying an overmatched Berlin-New Lebanon team, 106-19. The Bengals' defense held the hosts to just 2 points in the first half, and went into the break with a 71-2 lead. The 2nd & 3rd units rang up 35 points to Berlin's 17 in the second half. Ouch! Tamarac placed four starters in double figures, and you couldn't blame the fans if they left at halftime.
