News & notes

We would be remiss if we did not mention that the Albany FireWolves earned their first win of the season Saturday night, beating Saskatchewan, 10-6. Let's pray that is is a momentum builder for the rest of the season.

On a similar note, Siena's women's basketball team snapped a season-opening 10 game losing streak by beating Iona, 56-51, on Sunday.

The Albany Cup series between Siena & UAlbany is back, and will return next season.

Seems UAlbany coach Dwayne Killings reached out to his counterpart at Siena, Carmen Maciariello, to negotiate the relaunch of the series. Killings' predecessor, Will Brown, now with the Albany Patroons, had been upset that the series didn't alternate game sites, with most of the games played at what is now MVP Arena, as opposed to SEFCU Arena on the Albany campus. Then again, MVP Arena holds more fans, and it's the ticket sales that drives the series. Stay tuned.

When play began Tuesday night, Shenendehowa & Bethlehem were tied atop the standings in the Blue Division of the Suburban Council in women's basketball.

Not anymore.

The Lady Eagles suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Albany, 53-38. Shonyah Edmonds led all scorers with 26 points for the Lady Falcons, who are chasing Averill Park in the Grey Division. Maren Louridas had 17 for Bethlehem, which was playing its first game in 2 weeks, and without Ellie Cerf. According to coach Kim Wise, Cerf could be back as early as Friday, when the Lady Eagles play Burnt Hills. Albany visits Troy on Friday.

Shen is now all alone in first place after beating Colonie, 70-58.

As for Burnt Hills, they did get Carlie Rzeszotarski back after she missed two games last week, but while she had 11 points, it wasn't enough, as Averill Park defeated the Lady Spartans for the 2nd time this season, 61-53. Amelia Wood led all scorers with 22 points. Callie Chevalier led Burnt Hills with 14 points. The Lady Spartans have now lost 2 in a row.
