News & notes

 Shaker High graduate Jeff Hoffman has found a new home in the majors.

Hoffman was traded earlier this week from Colorado to Cincinnati, which made a surprising run to the playoffs, only to be swept out by Atlanta in the 1st round. They'll find room for Hoffman either in the starting rotation, with Trevor Bauer likely gone via free agency, or in the bullpen.

Troy High has released its revised bowling schedule for 2020-1. The first four matches originally scheduled--at home vs. CBA & Schenectady, on the road at Bethlehem & Shenendehowa---have not yet been rescheduled.

The lineup, as of now:

December 21-home opener vs. Colonie.
January 4-Guilderland.
January 7-Albany.
January 11-Ballston Spa.
January 20-Niskayuna.
January 21-Columbia.
January 26-@ Saratoga.
January 28-@ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

As of now the Flying Horses would have a six match homestand at Uncle Sam Lanes, but we'll see how the schedule finally takes shape, probably before the holidays.

The Troy-CBA swimming/diving schedule remains intact.

News & notes

 In addition to the Suburban Council soccer championships decided on Saturday, men's cross country and women's swimming & diving were determined as well.

Shenendehowa, having swept the soccer championships, the women's title shared with Shaker, and having also won the field hockey title on Friday, won the swimming & diving championship as well. Troy High, for what it's worth, finished 9th in the team competition, an indicator of how the Troy-Averill Park combined unit had improved from last year, when the two schools were competing individually.

Meanwhile, Saratoga won the men's cross country title. Troy did not field a full team, and had two individual runners near the bottom of the standings.

The women's cross country championships should be wrapping up as these words are being written.
=====================================
The 518 lost another sports icon, but to today's generation, he might be better known as a businessman.

Bob Daubney, 89, had bowled five games at Spare Time-Latham the other day before suffering a stroke, Daubney, whose pro shop had been located in Albany & Colonie before settling into Latham a few years back, passed away Saturday. It would not surprise anyone if Spare Time, located next door to the shop, would organize and host a memorial tournament before the end of the year.
=====================================
Speaking of tournaments, we have not heard anything about the traditional Thanksgiving Eve & Thanksgiving Day tournaments hosted by Walsh Bowling Centers being cancelled for this year. With social distancing in place, the lanes are active, so the fields for the doubles tournament on Wednesday at Green Island Lanes, and the Red Richard singles at Uncle Sam Lanes Thanksgiving Day are going to be smaller than normal. Stay tuned.

A most unlikely assist

 The Suburban Council soccer tournaments began on Tuesday with Shenendehowa getting a last minute bye into the semi-finals in the men's tournament when Colonie was forced to forfeit due to the discovery of a COVID-19 case in relation to the Colonie roster.

Four days later, the league was forced to declare Shen & Shaker co-champions of the women's tournament when the Lady Bison were forced to cancel their trip to Clifton Park for the title game due to another COVID-19 case on their campus. As was the case on Tuesday, the cancellation of today's game came virtually at the 11th hour, and the only fair thing to do was to declare co-champions.

One can only imagine how it's going to be if this happens during basketball season, if there is one, come January.

Oh, by the way, Shen won the men's tournament, downing CBA, 3-2. While the Plainsmen have their share of haters because of being an elite program, you can't fault them for the misfortune that has plagued their league rivals in Colonie & Latham. Albany County has seen a greater surge of COVID-19 cases of late, more so than Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties.

As the late Walter Cronkite often said, that's the way it is.

News & notes

 While RPI & Union have cancelled their hockey schedules for 2020-21 due to coronavirus, RPI goaltender Owen Savory decided he could not remain bunkered at the Troy campus.

Savory is transferring to UMass-Lowell, which, at present, is planning on playing this season. According to WNYT sports director/anchor Rodger Wyland, in his column in the Albany Times-Union, Savory needs to practice & play to keep himself in game shape and ready for a future pro career. Well, ya can't blame him for that.
==================================
The Adirondack Thunder of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have chosen to opt out for 2020-21 as well. That means there won't be any hockey played in the 518 until at least January, when high school hockey could possibly start. It also keeps ancient Cool Insuring Arena dark until further notice.
===================================
Soccer season is officially over at Troy High.

The Flying Horses' men's team lost to Columbia, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon, finishing at 1-12-1 for the season. Wins have been hard to come by for coach Mike Murnane's club the last three years. Since he's also a physical education teacher at Troy, his job is safe. That would not be the case if he were coaching a college team.

Update, 10:37 am: Troy's women's team shut out Albany, 3-0, and finish at 3-10-1.
=================================
As for the Suburban Council tournaments, Shenendehowa could finish their season on Saturday by winning both the men's & women's tournaments. The ladies will play Shaker, while the men face CBA. Shen is also in position to capture the Suburban Council field hockey title, also on Saturday. And let us not forget that league championships in swimming & cross country track will be decided this weekend as well.

Figure on this. Outside of Clifton Park, crickets will likely be chirping if Shen runs the table. That's the price of being an elite program in Section II.

Suburban Council soccer results, 11/17

 STOP THE PRESSES!!! Troy High finally won a men's soccer game!

Yes, it's true, but it's a pity that it was in the consolation tournament. Troy avenged an earlier loss to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake by shutting out the Spartans, 2-0, on the road Tuesday night. Mike Murnane's club will finish their season today at Columbia, which beat Schenectady, 2-1.

Men's quarterfinal results:

Shenendehowa defeated Colonie via forfeit due to COVID-19 concerns (a Colonie player tested positive).
CBA 3, Albany 1.
Niskayuna 3, Shaker 0.
Saratoga 3, Guilderland 2.

Thursday:

Saratoga @ Shen.
Niskayuna @ CBA.
===================================
Women's quarterfinal results:

Columbia defeated Guilderland via penalty kicks after the teams played to a 1-1 draw after regulation and double overtime.

Shen 1, Colonie 0.
Niskayuna 1, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 0.
Shaker 6, Saratoga 1.

Consolation semi-final, winner plays @ Troy on Thursday: Albany 10, Schenectady 0.

Also Thursday:

Niskayuna @ Shen.
Columbia @ Shaker.

The finals for both the men & women are on Saturday.

News & notes

 The other day, we reported that low-to-moderate risk sports such as bowling would be delayed until December 14. Now, the NYS Public High School Athletic Association is back-tracking, saying that bowling and other low-risk sports can start practices on November 30. High risk sports such as hockey & basketball would now start January 4.

Here is the official memo from NYSPHSAA:

==================================
RPI & Union College have cancelled their 2020-1 hockey seasons for both men & women due to coronavirus concerns. These schools are taking every precaution available, and with basketball also off the table, the season without sports at both schools continues.
==================================
Some quick notes from today's Suburban Council men's soccer tournament:

Colonie @ Shenendehowa has been cancelled. The way the notice on Shen's Twitter feed was written, it appears that the Garnet Raiders have forfeited, due to coronavirus cases turning up at Colonie. Shen will face the Saratoga-Guilderland winner on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Niskayuna downed Shaker, 2-0, and CBA tripped up Albany, 3-1, to advance to the semi-finals.

We should have the rest of the results tomorrow.

Monday, November 16, 2020

Suburban Council women's soccer pairings

 Here are the pairings for the 2020 Suburban Council women's soccer tournament, which begins tomorrow.

8. Colonie @ 1. Shenendehowa.
7. Saratoga @ 2. Shaker.
6. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake @ 3. Niskayuna (game at Schenectady High).
5. Guilderland @ 4. Columbia.

Troy will play in a consolation tournament, same as the guys. For some unknown reason, the Lady Horses' two wins are considered non-league (over Albany & Schenectady). The information in that regard may very well be incorrect. In any event, Troy will have one more go at it vs. Albany, while Schenectady travels to Averill Park. We'll have the results on Wednesday.

Update, 11/17/20, 11:43 am: According to Schedule Galaxy, the women's game is set for Thursday vs. an opponent to be named, as apparently it might not be Troy vs. Albany III after all. Instead, Troy gets a bye while Albany & Schenectady will play today. Troy will be the home team Thursday at 4:30 pm at Picken Field.

Suburban Council soccer pairings-boys

 I thought that by going winless, Troy High would not be in the post-season.

Instead, the Suburban Council will have all 12 teams that are competing this season in the playoff tournament, starting Tuesday, but as you'll see, only the top 8 actually will matter:

Suburaban Playoffs 2020
#1 Shenendehowa_

Troy High update, 11/14

 The fall sports season for Troy High officially ends with league championship meets in women's swimming & diving and cross country track for both men & women next week, but otherwise, it ended today.

The women's cross country team finally posted a win, defeating Schenectady, 15-39, finishing 1-5 on the season. The guys, however, lost to the Patriots to finish 0-7. As usual, the men's scores were incomplete.

In the pool, Bethlehem defeated Troy/Averill Park, 143-29. Ouch! Troy/AP finishes 2-4 on the season.

In soccer action, the Troy men were shut out yet again, 1-0, by Colonie, completing another winless season. We are awaiting the result of the women's home finale at Picken Field, and we should have that tomorrow.

Update, 11/15/20, 7:39 am: The Troy women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Colonie, finishing at 2-10-1 for the season.

Friday, November 13, 2020

Somehow, you knew this would happen

 Just when you thought it was safe to have winter sports start on time in Section II, reality sets in via an announcement earlier today that low-to-moderate risk sports, such as bowling and skiing, will have their seasons pushed back by 2 weeks. Practices would now start December 14, kicking off a 2 1/2 month winter season that would end at the end of February.

High risk sports, such as hockey & basketball, can also begin practice on December 14, but game play will be determined at a later date. Keep in mind, this is all pending approval from the state Department of Health. With recent surges in coronavirus cases, safety remains a top priority.

What does it mean for, say for example, LaSalle hockey?

Kiss the annual road trip to Plattsburgh good-bye for this season, at least for now. But, remember, too, that the state guidelines also affect schools all over the state, including Plattsburgh.

And what about Troy High?

While bowling will likely start on December 14, matches scheduled between November 30-December 11 will be rescheduled. Of course, Troy, like everyone else, is hoping to play basketball, so we'll see.

And they say April is the cruelest month......

News & notes

 The NCAA announced on Wednesday that the 2021 women's volleyball tournament will have Albany as one of its bubble locations. The event takes place at the end of March at Albany's Capital Center. Ticket prices, of course, will be inflated, as it also includes hotel accomodations in the immediate vicinity. Stay tuned.
=================================
Wednesday night was Senior Night at Troy High for the women's soccer team. Unlike the men, whose Senior Night was spoiled on Tuesday, the Lady Horses celebrated by routing Schenectady, 13-0. Kristen Paravella notched a hat trick and five assists to lead Troy (2-9-1), who will close at home on Saturday vs. Colonie (11 am). Goaltender Margaret Adams only needed to make two saves to preserve the shutout.

The funny part is, the game result was not reported to the local press. Coach Justin Haviland posted the result as part of today's announcements on the school website. Two wins, however, may not be enough to get the ladies into the Suburban Council tournament next week.
====================================
Update, 2:29 pm: Troy/Averill Park's season finale in swimming & diving for women vs. Bethlehem, scheduled for today, has been postponed. No make-up date has been set at this time, but with the league championships set for November 21, a make-up date should be decided soon. Bethlehem schools have been on remote learning for a couple of weeks due to coronavirus concerns, and had hoped to resume in-person learning this week. The fact that today's meet has been postponed reflects the fact that this has not been the case.

Update, 11/14/20, 9:06 am: The meet has been rescheduled for today at 10 am.

Wednesday, November 11, 2020

The end can't come soon enough

 Troy High has not won a men's soccer match in 2 years, and they're a game away from their 2nd straight winless season under Mike Murnane.

Mercifully, the season ends Saturday at Colonie, as the Flying Horses are safe in knowing they won't be a part of the Suburban Council tournament that starts November 17. The top 8 teams qualify, and Troy is in the cellar, now 0-10-1 after being shut out yet again, 5-0, by Christian Brothers Academy on Senior Night last night.

Just to show how bad things have been, Troy has been outscored 54-3 in 11 games this season. That ratios out to a goal differential of 18:1.

OUCH!!

The Troy women, at 1-9-1 heading into tonight's game vs. Schenectady, have scored more goals than their male counterparts. That tells me their coaches are getting more out of the ladies, even though there've been a couple of blowout losses mixed in. Head coach Justin Haviland does have that Master Teacher certification he received from Governor Cuomo three years ago to hang his hat on to prove he is a motivating force. Murnane, eight years removed from a sectional title, just doesn't have the talent on the pitch at the moment that he actually needs to compete.

Look at it this way. There's always next year.

News & notes

 UAlbany has suspended all athletic activities indefinitely in light of a recent spike in coronavirus cases. This, of course, means that at the moment, the school's basketball teams won't be able to start their schedule on time.

We get that college students, moreso than anyone else, don't want to be confined due to the pandemic, and want things to be as normal (i.e. weekend keg parties), but that isn't an option at the present time, and, as was demonstrated by Notre Dame students over the weekend, should be discouraged until the virus can be contained.
=====================================
RPI will not be able to defend their Liberty League basketball regular season title.

The league announced Monday that all winter sports are cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. For RPI and Union, they're still waiting, while practicing, for the green light for hockey season, which would already be underway were it not for the pandemic.
=====================================
Section II schools were notified Monday that "low-risk" and "moderate risk" sports, such as bowling, men's swimming & diving, and skiing, will begin as scheduled the week of November 30. Basketball & hockey are considered "high risk" sports, and the state has yet to give the all-clear on those sports.

Update, 9:32 pm: Following is the official memo from the NYS Public High School Athletic Association:

For Troy High, that means bowling starts as scheduled on November 30 with a road match at Del Lanes in Delmar vs. host Bethlehem, with the home opener at Uncle Sam Lanes vs. CBA a week later.

LaSalle's hockey team has an annual road trip to Plattsburgh the first weekend in December that now is in limbo. My only question is this. How hard would it be to have the players wear face masks under their helmets?

Just askin'.

A sunny but bleak Saturday

 We are in the middle of Indian summer. However, for hometown sports fans, it didn't feel that way on Saturday.

Let's start with the Breeders' Cup. Sackatoga Stables' Tiz The Law was expected to bounce back after a loss to Authentic in the Kentucky Derby two months ago. Nope. What we got instead was a sort of validation that, of late, the blue grass of Kentucky has proven to be Kryptonite for Tiz The Law.

Authentic, trained by Bob Baffert, won the Breeders' Cup Classic in convincing fashion, which was what Tiz The Law was supposed to do. Instead, Tiz The Law picked the wrong time for a clunker, in his final race of the season, if not also his career, finishing a dismal 6th, and disappointing his backers back home.

The next move, of course, is up to Jack Knowlton and his partners at Sackatoga, but Tiz The Law's 3 year old campaign is over.

Back at home, Troy High's soccer teams wasted the momentum built from the women's 1st win of the season on Thursday night in dispatching Albany.

Justin Haviland's club continued its season-ending homestand by leaving the momentum in the locker room, absorbing an 8-0 shutout at the hands of Shaker, as the Lady Bison completed a season sweep. The Lady Horses are now idle until Wednesday when they play Schenectady. In Latham, the Shaker men's team plastered winless Troy, 10-0. The biggest problems for Mike Murnane's team are in order, defense and scoring, shut out in all but two games this season.

The Troy men (0-9-1) will host CBA on Senior Night on Tuesday, and finish on the road at Colonie next Saturday. The women (1-8-1) finish at home, as Senior Day is likely either Wednesday vs. Schenectady or next Saturday vs. Colonie.

Saturday, November 7, 2020

If it feels like home......

 For the first time in more than 20 years, Siena College's men's basketball team will play some regular season home games at the Alumni Recreation Center (ARC) on their Loudonville campus next month.

As with UAlbany, there will be no fans at the ARC, which will call back to the now-famous 1989 run where fans were barred from the ARC due to a measles outbreak. This time, it is due to state guidelines in relation to the coronavirus, a much tougher, deadlier disease.

Also, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has adjusted its league schedule so that member teams will play two-game series on the same weekend vs. league rivals, which is the same model that the America East Conference, UAlbany's league, is using. Whether or not Siena will continue to use the ARC for men's games or move back to Times-Union Center after January 1 remains an open question.

News & notes

 UAlbany has suspended men's basketball activities due to a recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases on campus. How long this will last, we don't know for sure, but this does put the Great Danes' participation in a pre-season tournament in jeopardy. We'll keep you posted.
================================
Sackatoga Stables' Tiz The Law, after a 2 month layoff, will run in the Breeders' Cup Classic Saturday, where he is the early morning line favorite. Tiz The Law skipped last month's Preakness after losing in the Kentucky Derby in September. The Breeders' Cup actually starts today at Keeneland with 5 races, airing on NBC Sports Network and, locally, OTB-TV.
=================================
Troy High notes: Troy's women's soccer team snapped a season long winless streak Thursday night, shutting out Albany, 3-0. Cooper Murray had a pair of goals to lead the Lady Horses (1-6-1). Justin Haviland's club is hoping to take that momentum with them when they return to Picken Field tomorrow to play Shaker in a return match.

However, the Troy-Averill Park women's swimming & diving team dropped a close decision to Ballston Spa on Wednesday to drop to 2-3 on the season with 1 meet left, next Thursday vs. Bethlehem. A .500 record would be nice, wouldn't it?

Troy's bowling team will begin its season on November 30 at Bethlehem (match at Del Lanes), but a road trip to Averill Park has been pushed back 15 days from its original date of December 2 to December 17, due likely to a scheduling conflict. Meanwhile, Troy's basketball teams are awaiting clearance from the state before their season starts on December 4. We'll keep you posted on that as well.

Troy-CBA's men's swimming & diving schedule has 6 meets, but curiously missing is Albany, which will not field a men's team this year. The lineup:

December 22: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
January 5: Home opener vs. Bethlehem.
January 12: @ Ballston Spa.
January 19: @ Niskayuna.
January 21: Schenectady.
February 2: Senior day vs. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

Coach Jeff Maxwell will be looking to build on last year's 7-1 ledger, as well as the improved performance of the women this season (see above).
================================
We've obtained information on various meets/games from sites such as Capital Region Soccer and from the Albany Times-Union, as El Cheapo Media isn't even bothering to send anyone to cover Troy High sports anymore, unless Troy is competing against Shenendehowa, Saratoga, etc., since El Cheapo prefers to give Saratoga County priority these days.

Time is running out for Troy High fall sports

 Including yesterday's action, two weeks remain in the fall sports season in Section II.

At Troy High, a debate over the presidential election might elicit more excitement in the cafeteria or in social studies class, considering the state of affairs of the school's sports teams.

Yeah, things are that bad.

Troy's women's swimming & diving team, which merged with Averill Park this season, is 2-2 entering a meet this afternoon vs. Ballston Spa. Those two wins are the only wins Troy's sports teams have had since fall play began last month. The golf & women's tennis teams finished 2020 with no wins, and the tennis team didn't earn a bid for the Suburban Council championships on Halloween due to their poor record, winning just three sets, all against Schenectady, while going 0-8 on the season.

The soccer teams are also winless after losing to Guilderland last night. The women were shut out, 4-0, at Picken Field, while the men were battered, 7-1, on the road. The women begin a season-ending 4 game homestand tomorrow vs. Albany in a rematch from last month. The Lady Horses & Lady Falcons played a 2-2 draw on October 9. There are no overtimes in soccer this year, the better to minimalize the risk of coronavirus, I suspect. The men are off until Saturday afternoon at Shaker, and will have Senior Night next Tuesday vs. CBA at Picken Field.

The funny thing about last night's men's soccer game is, the score was not reported by either school to the Albany Times-Union, or, if it was, it was after the deadline for the early editions this morning.

The women's soccer remaining schedule:

Thursday: Albany (6:15 kickoff).
Saturday: Shaker (2:00).
Veteran's Day: Schenectady.
November 14: Senior Day vs. Colonie.

Men's soccer remaining schedule:

Saturday: @ Shaker (2:00).
Tuesday: Senior Night vs. CBA (6:15).
Nov. 14: @ Colonie.

The cross country teams were to be at Albany 9 days ago, but that meet was never reported. Albany had moved the date from its originally scheduled date of November 7 for unknown reasons, likely a scheduling conflict. If the meet took place, we don't know, because results were never submitted to the press. Troy's teams will close at Schenectady on November 14, leading to the league championships on November 21 (men) & 22 (women).

Winter sports will start with bowling at Bethlehem on November 30.

News & notes

 UAlbany offensive lineman and Saratoga graduate Griffin Clancy will start his pro career by staying in the 518.

Clancy signed last week with the Albany Empire as they begin to build their roster for 2021 and the National Arena League. Let's hope they can find some more local talent, which would certainly help attendance at Times-Union Center.
=====================================
This should come as no surprise, but the PWBA's tour stop in South Glens Falls in June will have a local flava.

Rotterdam native Liz Kuhlkin, a 2 time winner on tour, is already making plans for a homecoming trip June 3-5, per the Albany Times-Union. If that doesn't get any of the local stations interested in covering the tournament, what will?
=======================================
Albany Academy graduate Dion Lewis was one of the offensive stars for the Giants in a 25-23 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday.

Lewis caught a 7 yard TD pass from Daniel Jones, and returned 3 kickoffs for 98 yards. With Davonta Freeman out with an ankle injury, Big Blue activated veteran Alfred Morris off the practice squad to take his place, splitting time in the backfield with Wayne Gallman. Coach Joe Judge would rather use Lewis as a receiver out of the backfield in specific situations than let him start. Morris has played with Dallas & Washington in the course of his NFL career before signing with the Giants this year.

You'd think that Judge, who was a special teams coach under Bill Belichick in New England, while Lewis and Tampa Bay QB Tom Brady were there, would know enough to better utilize Lewis, and to come up with a full-game defensive strategy against Brady. Ex-Giant Jason Pierre-Paul, playing his first game at the Meadowlands since leaving for Tampa a couple of years ago, had a couple of sacks.
===================================
Maple Hill completed a sweep of the Patroon Conference soccer titles, as the women knocked off Greenville Monday. The league had a shorter season than other leagues that were willing to play this fall. The Suburban Council, for example, still has two weeks of play left. Go figure.

Monday, November 2, 2020

News & notes

 UAlbany has released its full basketball schedules for both the men and women for the coming season. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, there will be no fans at SEFCU Arena.

For the men, there are no home-&-home conference series this season. Instead, there will be two game series each weekend through the end of February once conference play starts. Now, you have to hope UAlbany follows RPI's lead and starts streaming the games live on their website.

The men's schedule:

Nov. 25 at Niagara
Nov. 28 Marist
Dec. 3-4 BHOF Tip-Off Tournament
Dec. 9 Colgate
Dec. 19-20 UMBC*
Dec. 23 Bryant
Jan. 2-3 at Vermont*
Jan. 9-10 Stony Brook*
Jan. 16-17 NJIT*
Jan. 23-24 at New Hampshire*
Jan. 30-31 UMass Lowell*
Feb. 6-7 at Maine*
Feb. 18-19 Binghamton*
Feb. 27-28 at Hartford*

And for the women:

Nov. 29 Central Connecticut State
Dec. 2 Siena
Dec. 5 at Marist
Dec. 9 at Hofstra
Dec. 15 at Army West Point
Dec. 19-20 at UMBC*
Jan. 2-3 Vermont*
Jan. 9-10 at Stony Brook*
Jan. 16-17 at NJIT*
Jan. 23-24 New Hampshire*
Jan. 30-31 at UMass Lowell*
Feb. 6-7 Maine*
Feb. 13-14 at Binghamton*
Feb. 27-28 Hartford*

Courtesy of WTMM FM.

As you can see, the women will, per tradition, play at the opposite site of the men's series. So far, there isn't a men's game vs. Siena, as that series came to an end two years ago.

=================================

Troy High's cross country team fell again on Saturday, as both teams were defeated by Colonie. Still waiting for confirmation on a meet that was moved forward on the calendar to last Monday vs. Albany, but not reported.

News & notes

 We all know the 518 is largely Yankee country. Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro grew up a Yankee fan, and, today, leads the Royals ...
