News & notes

 The Tri-City Valleycats will try again today to salvage their season with a doubleheader against the Sussex County Miners. Tuesday's late afternoon storm forced postponement until this afternoon at 4 pm. The 'Cats will need to win out if they want a Wild Card berth in the Frontier League playoffs.

News & notes

 The Tri-City Valleycats' playoff chances are slipping away in the midst of a 4 game losing streak heading into their road finale today vs. the NY Boulders.

The Boulders defeated Tri-City, 11-10, in a slugfest Saturday night, and have dominated the 'Cats in this budding in-state rivalry. The 'Cats could be mathematically eliminated with a Boulders win today.
======================================
LaSalle's women's golf team will wait just a wee bit longer for their debut.

Their scheduled home opener vs. Albany Academy on Wednesday has been cancelled. No explanation, though one suspects scheduling conflicts. According to the Colonial Council's page for the Cadets, the start time was moved to 4:15 pm, which would be the normal start after the school year officially begins. Instead, LaSalle & Academy will be in a 3-team meet with Mohonasen on September 22 at the Colonie Country Club.

News & notes

 The Tri-City Valleycats dropped a 6-4 decision to the NY Boulders on Friday, despite another home run from Brad Zunica, but that's not the only story coming from the 'Cats' camp.

You might recall that the team filed suit against Major League Baseball after the dissolution of the NY-Penn League in 2020. That case will go to trial in 2023 in Manhattan, but according to an attorney who was interviewed by the Albany Times-Union, he doesn't think the case will be settled before it goes to trial. The Valleycats are averaging over 2,000 fans per game since entering the Frontier League last year.

Stay tuned.
==========================================
WWE fans had to either go to the Fox website or find alternate sources of streaming Friday, as Smackdown was pre-empted on WXXA due to the station's commitment to Buffalo Bills pre-season football. As it was, the Bills finished the pre-season 2-1 after losing to Carolina, 21-0.

Fox also has coverage of the Travers at Saratoga this afternoon. Smackdown should be available On Demand later today.
==========================================
UAlbany's fall sports season has gotten off to a slow start.

The women's soccer team fell to Brown, 2-0, and the volleyball team was defeated by Kent State, 3-1, on Friday. Today, the field hockey team hosts Northeastern, while the volleyball team travels to Virginia for the James Madison Invitational. The Danes will face Robert Morris this afternoon.
==========================================
Due to space considerations, not all of Friday's high school scores reached the pages of the Times-Union this morning. What's missing today could be in Sunday's editions.

Niskayuna 257, CBA 266.
Troy @ Shenendehowa was cancelled due to weather. No make-up date has been set.

The Tri-City Valleycats had to settle for a split of their 4 game series with Ottawa after the Titans won, 3-2, on Thursday night. The 'Cats return to the US to open a 3 game set vs. the NY Boulders tonight.

Veteran jockey John Velazquez won his 1,000th race at Saratoga on Thursday afternoon. Overall, Velazquez has won more than 6,000 races between the US and abroad.

News & notes

 After sweeping a doubleheader on Tuesday, the Tri-City Valleycats dropped a 6-5 decision to Ottawa on Wednesday night. The 'Cats had entered play six games behind East division leader Quebec, and tied with Sussex County for 2nd place, pending the outcome of the Miners' game vs. the Empire State Greys.

Tri-City closes the series in Ottawa tonight at 6:30.
=====================================
Not only are high schools starting their sports schedules, but local colleges are, too.

For example, Siena's women's soccer team opens at New Hampshire tonight. Their men's team is at Sacred Heart. UAlbany's men's team hosts Boston University. The College of St. Rose begins its volleyball slate by hosting Dominican, and their men's soccer team will play Mercy.

Due to the Albany Times-Union's revamped deadline policies, most of the scores might not appear in Friday's editions.
======================================
Wednesday's high school scoreboard;

Guilderland swept their season opening golf matches over Niskayuna. The men won by a count of 250 to 263, while the women prevailed, 131-189. The Dutchmen host Troy this morning, but it's for the men only, as the women's match has been cancelled.

The price of losing

 Last year, Troy High experimented with fielding a women's golf team for the first time. Unfortunately, there isn't going to be a 2nd season just yet.

Per Schedule Galaxy, Troy has cancelled its entire women's golf slate for 2022, which was to start this week. The only conclusion there can be is the lack of interest among the women, and the root cause is the fact that the Lady Horses failed to win a single meet last season. Yes, these ladies did their best to compete, but the talent simply isn't there or willing for 2022.

Will they try again in 2023. That might be up to not only Athletic Director Paul Reinisch, but the school board as well.

In other Troy news, the men's golf team will wait an extra day to play Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. The meet, originally scheduled for September 8, has been pushed to September 9, the last of an 8 meet series over the first two weeks of the season. The men open at Guilderland on Thursday.

Also, the Troy/Tamarac/Averill Park women's swimming & diving team has had their meet at Shenendehowa, originally set for September 23, moved up two days to Wednesday, September 21. No reason given for the change, although the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah starts that weekend.

We should see results coming in starting at the end of the week.

News & notes

 Per James Allen of the Albany Times-Union, Section II football training camps started on Saturday, two days earlier than originally planned. While this may be a boon in terms of long-term planning for the season, which starts September 2, there are some key notes:

Averill Park has named Nicholas Galuski, son of assistant coach Mark Galuski as the starting quarterback. Galuski was a wide receiver last season. The Warriors said good-bye to last year's starter Gavin Giordano via graduation back in June.

After some confusing information on the website, it has been confirmed that CBA will open the season at LaSalle on September 2 in the Battle For The Sabre.

Photo courtesy Albany Times-Union.

Coach Bob "The Builder" Burns won't have two-way star David Clement this season. The Syracuse commit suffered a season ending injury prior to the start of training camp.
======================================
Some radio announcers might be more comfortable with the English translation of Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers) than trying to pronounce the French version. Found that out this morning as WROW morning host Ben Patten read the result of Sunday's Aigles (Eagles) loss to the Tri-City Valleycats. The 'Cats answered the Aigles' 8-1 win on Saturday with a 8-1 win of their own in the rubber game, as Cito Culver and Denis Phipps homered for the visitors.

Tri-City continues its Canadian trip in Ottawa on Tuesday.
====================================
For reasons known only to the schools involved, Troy High's women's golf team will not be at Shenendehowa, though the guys will, on Friday.

Per Schedule Galaxy, and this has been known for a couple of weeks now, the women's golf match was cancelled, with no makeup date set. Something tells me either Shen or Troy would not have a full team available for Friday's match, which would be the 2nd of the season. For Troy's women, who have their own squad for the 2nd straight season, this is not a good sign.
====================================
Tonight's Mets-Yankees game, assuming it's played, will air on either CBS6 or CW15 at 7 pm. After the station manager decided to put a Mets-Braves game on CBS6 9 days ago, you just don't know.

Update, 5:57 pm.: Cable guide says the game will air on CBS6.

News & notes

 It was announced earlier this week that Richard Ensor would be retiring as Commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) after the 2022-23 season. Ensor, you can assume, played a role in Siena joining the MAAC, and the coming season, his last, will mark 35 years on the job.
=======================================
The Tri-City Valleycats are heading back to Canada for a six game swing vs. Trois-Rivieres and Ottawa, after sweeping a truncated home series vs. the Titans by sweeping a doubleheader on Thursday.

The 'Cats won the suspended game, 6-3, after being down, 3-0, when the game was suspended on Wednesday night, then won the scheduled game, 10-8, powered by 5 home runs, including two for Carson McCusker.

However, the team will travel without catcher Austin Elder, who is not vaccinated as of press time. Elder will rejoin the team in Poloma, when the 'Cats play the New York Boulders next Friday. Tri-City closes the season at home August 30-September 4 vs. Sussex County and the returning Empire State Greys, who were swept last weekend.
=====================================
The administration at Hudson Valley Community College continues to create controversy.

After the decision was made to close Robert Conway Arena, forcing LaSalle's hockey team to relocate their home games to Frear Park for the 2nd time in 3 seasons (only one game has been officially scheduled for Frear as of press time), the school administration decided to waive the vaccination protocols regarding not only COVID-19, but also monkeypox, which would be a risk for the school's sports teams. I've heard of throwing caution to the wind, but this is not only ridiculous, but dangerous.
======================================
Saratoga's leading trainer, Mechanicville native Chad Brown, was arrested Wednesday after he was alleged to have choked an ex-girlfriend and fellow trainer who, according to Brown's attorney, broke into the house. With a little more than 2 weeks left in the meet, ending September 5, the New York Racing Association may have to make a decision on Brown sooner rather than later. If that's the case, I don't like Brown's chances of finishing the meet.
=======================================
When the Albany FireWolves begin play this winter, they'll do so without leading scorer Joe Resetaritis, who signed a 3 year free agent deal with Philadelphia, which will allow Resetaritis to be closer to his family, as he's from the Philadelphia area. That means coach-GM Glenn Clark has a offensive hole to fill.
=========================================
RPI rewarded men's hockey coach Dave Smith with a 5 year contract extension coming off a successful 2021-2 campaign, if you call finishing 5 games under. 500 (18-23-3) successful. The Engineers open the 2022-3 season at home vs. Mercyhurst on Friday, October 7.

Sunday, August 14, 2022

News & notes

 Brantley Bell extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a 1st inning home run, and then, the Tri-City Valleycats needed a 9th inning sacrifice fly from Austin Elder to walk off the Empire State Greys, 9-8. The 'Cats will go for the sweep this afternoon.
=========================================
They say it's hard beating a team 3 times in a single season, as the Carolina Cobras did in sweeping a regular season series against the Albany Empire. However, the Cobras peaked a wee bit too soon, and a late swoon enabled the Empire to be the #1 seed in the National Arena League, setting the stage for a 4th meeting between the two teams at MVP Arena on Saturday. Once the Empire took the lead in the middle of the 1st quarter, they never looked back, and won their 2nd straight NAL title, 47-20.

In football, payback can be brutal.
=======================================
The Albany Times-Union has been charting the progress of Section II alumni in baseball the last couple of weeks. You know that Ben Anderson, in the Texas Rangers' minor league chain, is recovering from Tommy John surgery. You know that Jeff Hoffman (Shaker) is on the IL for the Cincinnati Reds, so he was spared the embarrassment of pitching at Citi Field last week vs. the Mets.

But what about other players? Well..........

We'll start with Ben's twin brother, Ian, who was recalled from Gwinnett to pitch the nightcap vs. Miami Saturday night, instead of the opener, as had been originally planned. The extra time worked for Ian, as he went six innings, giving up 2 runs while walking 1 and striking out 6. Atlanta completed a doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win, giving Ian his 10th win of the season.

As for the rest:

Brian O'Keefe (Colonie) is a catcher in the Seattle chain, batting .283, with 11 homers and 33 RBI's at AAA Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League. Could get called up come September.

Zach Remillard (LaSalle) is a 3rd baseman, also at AAA, with Charlotte, the top affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Zach is hitting .274, with 6 homers and 37 RBI's. He could also get a look next month.

Kevin Smith (Columbia) appears to have been recalled by the Oakland A's. His current stats have him batting .180 with 2 homers and 13 RBI's. You can understand why he was benched.

Garrett Whitley (Niskayuna) is playing for AA Biloxi in the Milwaukee organization. The outfielder is batting .257 with 2 homers and 7 RBI's.

A 3rd Shenendehowa alumnus, Justin Yurchak is a 1st baseman for AA Tulsa, affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Justin is batting .275 with 6 homers and 35 RBI's.

It appears Ben Anderson did pitch early this season before being shut down and undergoing Tommy John surgery. Anderson appeared in 9 games for Hickory of the South Atlantic League (Advanced A), posting a 5-3 record, a 3.51 ERA, with 29 strikeouts in 41 innings.

Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) is in Buffalo, Toronto's top farm team, and could be back in September.

Jake Fishman (Union College, the lone college only player on the list) was signed by Miami, and has appeared in 28 games for the Marlins' AAA team in Jacksonville. He's 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA, and has fanned 45 batters in 46 innings, a shade more than a batter an inning.

Tyler Mattison (Fort Ann) is with Lakeland of the Florida State League, an entry level farm club of the Detroit Tigers. Tyler's appeared in 15 games, posting a 2-0 record despite a 7.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings. That means he's been battered a bit early.

John Rooney (Hoosic Valley) is also at Tulsa, where he's 4-4 in 17 games, with a 5.14 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 77 innings.

Danny Watson (Columbia/Virginia Commonwealth) was drafted by the Yankees, and is pitching for Tampa. He's appeared in 31 games with a 4-3 record, a 3.97 ERA, and 54 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings.

The only one on the list drafted this year is Dale Stanavich (Amsterdam/Rutgers), who's gotten off to a fast start for Miami's FSL team in Jupiter. He's appeared in 3 games, pitching 3 2/3 innings with 3 strikeouts as a reliever.

So much for "Smallbany", right?

News & notes

 In a feature piece in today's Albany Times-Union, Mark Singelais reports that Shenendehowa grad Ben Anderson hasn't pitched due to having had Tommy John surgery on his elbow, and is training for a return at the Texas Rangers' spring home in Surprise, Arizona. Ben and twin brother Ian (Shen/Atlanta) technically don't represent the 518 anymore as their parents relocated to North Carolina recently.

Ian will return from the minors today to pitch vs. Miami in the 1st half of a doubleheader.
===========================================
The Tri-City Valleycats, after losing 2 of 3 to Quebec, returned home to beat the Empire State Greys, 5-4. Red hot Brantley Bell is on a 24 game hitting streak, a team record.
============================================
Mechanicville native Chad Brown is the leading trainer at Saratoga as we approach the end of week 5. Brown has saddled 25 winners heading into action today.

Meanwhile, Dylan Davis (Saratoga), son of Robbie Davis, was suspended by the track stewards for careless riding, and will serve out the suspension starting on Wednesday. He'll be eligible to return on August 26.
============================================
Impact Wrestling confirmed on Thursday that the October 7 Bound For Glory pay per view event will originate from the Washington Avenue Armory.

The Armory hosted an independent show back in March, and has a rich history of hosting wrestling in the 518, dating back to at least the 1970's, when promoter Ted Bayly alternated between the Armory and the RPI Field House. As of press time, the Armory's website doesn't have ticket prices listed for the show.

News & notes

 Throughout softball season, there was a lot of speculation that Troy High 2-sport star Olivia DeCitise was considering Nebraska for bowling in college.

Then, last month, came a game changer.

On July 22, DeCitise posted on Twitter that she is committed to UMass-Lowell, likely more for softball than bowling, given her extraordinary junior season.

Stay tuned.
==========================================
The Tri-City Valleycats completed a 3-game sweep of the New Jersey Jackals, 6-4, on Sunday, and this was after the game was delayed 45 minutes due to a mid-afternoon rainstorm.

We've talked about the 'Cats' 2nd generation star, Brantley Bell (son of Jay), but the Jackals have a 2nd generation Bell of their own in George Bell, Jr., whose father starred for Toronto, Cleveland, and Baltimore in his playing days. The younger Bell homered in a losing effort on Sunday.

In other 'Cats news, it appears more than a few fans listen to Ben Patten's morning show on WROW, and have apparently raised issues about how Patten hasn't announced Valleycats scores all season. That changed this morning when, after reading the Mets, Yankees, & Red Sox results, Patten read the 'Cats result as well. Better late than never.
=========================================
We've noted how Atlanta Braves pitcher Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) has had control issues this season. After going 4 2/3 innings on Friday, Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday with the goal of correcting his mechanical issues. He's expected back on Saturday to pitch in a doubleheader vs. Miami.

It didn't help matters on Friday when Mets announcer Gary Cohen misidentified Anderson's alma mater as "Clifton Park High School".  Karma bit the Mets on Friday, but then.....!
========================================
Pretty sure more than a few people were stunned to find Saturday's Mets-Braves nightcap on WRGB instead of sister station WCWN. Due to the CW having first run programming on Saturday, the decision was made to air the game on CBS6, which hasn't had any baseball this season, now that the Yankees ended their association with WPIX for Amazon Prime.

Saturday, August 6, 2022

News & notes

 What we neglected to mention in reporting that Thursday's Tri-City Valleycats game vs. Ottawa was rained out is that the Titans will make one more trip into Troy on August 17-18. The teams have two options:

1. Use the extra off day on the 16th to make up the rainout, or:

2. They'll play two on either the 17th or the 18th.

Meantime, Tri-City walked off New Jersey in a back & forth game, 8-7, on Friday. Brad Zunica drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 9th.
========================================
Prior to Friday's Mets-Braves game, ye scribe had to deal with some Mets fans on Reddit who have 0 respect for opposing teams. Noting the struggles of Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa), they thought the 3rd year starter would be easy pickings.

Thanks for jinxing your team at the wrong time, jabronies.

Anderson didn't get out of the 5th inning, only going 4 2/3 innings, as he & the Braves' bullpen frittered away an early 8-0 lead that knocked Mets starter Taijuan Walker out in the 2nd inning. The Mets' 'pen held the Braves off the board until William Contreras homered in the 9th, only for Jeff McNeil to answer in the home half. Kenley Jansen closed the door, and Atlanta evened the 5 game series with a 9-6 win.

There was a scare in the 5th when Anderson went up and in on Mets slugger Pete Alonso. So, the clever lads in the SNY production truck came up a gem as the camera closed on manager Buck Showalter, given all the times Mets batters have been hit this season. The background turned red, and the opening bars of Quincy Jones' iconic theme from Ironside played to illustrate Showalter's anger.

Enjoy the video highlights:

Anderson's final line: 4 2/3 innings, 4 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks, 3 K's. His ERA rises to 5.11.
========================================
After Anderson had taped a commercial for Mohawk Chevrolet last year, fellow Shen alum Kevin Huerter, now with Sacramento, got in on the act, and his latest commercial, this one for Mohawk Honda, premiered this week. Look for it to be inserted in local ad blocks for the next few months.

More wrestling coming to Albany

 For the first time since 2012, Impact Wrestling, formerly TNA Wrestling, is heading to Albany, and for a pay-per-view, to boot.

On Thursday's episode of Impact, it was announced that the annual Bound For Glory event will take place in Albany on Friday, October 7, which will be a true test of a wrestling fan's loyalty. The event will take place opposite Smackdown, which, depending on Fox's baseball playoff schedule, will air on either Fox or FS1 (Spectrum channel 400), that night.

Anthem, the Canadian based parent of both Impact and the AXS network, a premium channel on Spectrum, is looking to put a dent in WWE's ratings, blunting the older company's recent momentum surge.

What isn't clear is where the show will take place in the capital city. If it's MVP Arena, it'll be their 3rd live wrestling event in as many months, joining AEW's Dynamite (September 14) and Monday Night Raw (November 21). Otherwise, WTEN is speculating it could be the ancient, acoustically challenged Washington Avenue Armory, with its rich wrestling history.

But, that ain't all, folks.

Women of Wrestling, or, WOW, is going into national syndication next month after getting booted off AXS. Former WWE women's champion AJ Lee (April Mendez-Brooks) is on board as a commentator, according to early reports. News & notes

 The Perfect Game Collegiate League ended its season with the Amsterdam Mohawks---surprise, surprise---winning another league title. The league added former NY-Penn League franchise Batavia last year, and the Mohawks, now without hometown star Dale Stanavich (Miami), defeated Batavia in the best of 3 series, 2-1. The Muckdogs are one of a handful of former NY-P teams, the Valleycats included, still functioning after the NY-Penn League was disbanded.

Speaking of the Valleycats, after splitting the first two games of their series with Ottawa, the 'Cats announced earlier this afternoon that tonight's game has been postponed due to rain. Tri-City sits in 4th place in the Frontier League's East division, 8 1/2 games in arrears of 1st place Quebec.

The big story, though, is how the 'Cats are rewriting the team record books for homers. Led by Denis Phipps and scorching hot Brantley Bell, Tri-City is looking at possibly matching the numbers of some major league clubs (i.e. the Yankees) by the time the season ends next month.

518 alumni watch: Toronto sent pitcher Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) back to the minors recently. Gage will likely return when the rosters expand next month.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati placed pitcher Jeff Hoffman (Shaker) on the IL for the 2nd time this season. Not sure why.

Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) is scheduled to pitch tomorrow for Atlanta vs. the Mets at Citi Field. Weather permitting, of course, as rain is in the forecast in Flushing, just like it is here. Anderson is set to oppose the Mets' Taijuan Walker. Atlanta is set to start the series tonight, 3 1/2 games behind the Mets in the NL East.
