News & notes

 Sometimes, deadlines can be brutal in the print media.

WNYT's Rodger Wyland wrote this morning in the Albany Times-Union about Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson returning to Atlanta after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels last week.

Unfortunately, the timing of Wyland's Quick Take was a day late and, well....! Anderson was DFA'd by the Braves Tuesday to make room for AJ Smith-Shawver coming off the injured list. Now, Atlanta has 5 days, not 10, to trade or release Anderson, or send him back to the minors. I guess what I read about Anderson being assigned to Rome might've been old news that appeared in a Google search.

The Mets, Yankees, & Red Sox still have a chance if Anderson hits the open market again.

It's been a while since ye scribe attended a sports card show (we used to call them conventions). That may soon change.

There will be a card show, not just for sports cards, but gamers like Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, and such, May 10 at the Albany Capital Center. $5 gets you in the door, and if you're like me, and have had trouble buying this year's baseball cards on a consistent basis due to hoarders, this may be a golden opportunity to catch up.

And it'll give you something to do with your time before the Tulip Fest.
========================================================
We're all accustomed to doubleheaders in baseball & softball, but tennis?

Welp, that's what happened when Queensbury & Ballston Spa got together for a double dip. The Spartans swept both matches, 6-3 & 8-1.
=======================================================
We neglected to mention that when CBA played Monday, they rededicated their baseball field in memory of coach Casey O'Connor, who passed away last year in the offseason. Current coach Nick Davey has the Brothers in contention for a regular season title in the Suburban Council, and you can believe O'Connor is watching over his team from high above.
=========================================================

News & notes

 Overshadowed by all the drama surrounding Shedeur Sanders in the NFL draft, 2 UAlbany alumni have found NFL homes for now.

Receiver Seven McGee has received an invitation to the Atlanta Falcons mini-camp, while lineman Ozzie Hutchinson was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. Best wishes to both.
==================================
Late last week, Glens Falls basketball legend Jimmer Fredette retired as a player. Today, we're learning that Fredette has been hired as managing director of USA Basketball ahead of next year's Summer Olympics. While Fredette, drafted out of Brigham Young, never really stuck in the NBA, he found his greatest success playing overseas until announcing his retirement last week.
=====================================
Well, that didn't take long.

Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson is back in the Atlanta Braves organization after the Braves claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday afternoon.

File photo courtesy The Daily Gazette.

Anderson has been assigned to the Braves' Class AA affiliate in Rome, Georgia.
================================================
Shaker alum Jeff Hoffman picked up the save Friday as Toronto beat the Yankees, but the Bronx Bombers swept a Sunday doubleheader from the Blue Jays, with Hoffman not being used in either game. He'll make one final trip to the Bronx with the Jays later this summer.
=================================================
Ahead of the Belmont Stakes in June at Saratoga, Stewart's is renaming their mint crunch crumble ice cream, the Bel-Mint Stakes. The final leg of the Triple Crown will be contested June 7, and Stewart's is hoping to move plenty of ice cream before then.
==================================================
While Troy High & Holy Trinity will take the field at 7 pm tonight, the Lady Horses' flag football game vs. Schenectady has been moved to Schenectady High on Saturday. Start time is 10 am. No reason for the late change, as the track teams will be in Colonie that morning. Sounds like they may have a security staffing issue on Saturday.

The Albany Times-Union had the Troy-Holy Trinity game listed for 4:25 pm today, but were never notified of the time change. Nothing new.
===================================================
We're learning that the reason ex-Firebirds Darius Prince & Dwayne Hollis didn't play against their former team on Friday was because the Corpus Christi Tritons are having money issues (no surprise), and Prince & Hollis are among the players who haven't gotten paid.

Well, that, plus the fact that other Tritons skipped the game, explains why the Tritons were treated like a college tomato can in a 100-12 rout.

Troy High sports review, through April 26

 We are halfway through the spring season, but there's still plenty of work to do.

Softball:

Current record: 5-3 (5-0 Colonial Council).

Sean Geisel's club remains undefeated in league play, but outside of the Colonial, Troy has yet to win a non-league game. After beating LaSalle & Cohoes, the Lady Horses were mercy-ruled by Ballston Spa on Friday. Saturday's game vs. Glens Falls was rained out, and likely may not be made up. If it is, we'll let you know.

Next:

The Lady Horses welcome Mohonasen on Monday, Ichabod Crane on Wednesday, and will have a make-up game vs. Burnt Hills on Thursday. The Glens Falls game was to start a 4 game homestand, which is now down to 3. The week closes with a trip to Albany Academy.

Tennis:

Current record: 2-2.

Yes, you read that right. Because scores are not being reported to the press, we didn't know until scoping the THS website the other day, and finding that Troy defeated Schenectady-Mohonasen on April 14, and Cobleskill-Richmondville on Tuesday, before losing to Ichabod Crane on Thursday.

Next:

Albany Academy comes in Monday looking for a season sweep. Then, Ravena visits on Wednesday. The three match homestand ends with a non-league tilt vs. Schoharie on Friday.

Flag football:

Current record: 3-2.

Frank Rogers' club got an unexpected day off with Wednesday's game vs. Schenectady being postponed without explanation. Predictably, the Horses lost to Columbia on Friday.

Next:

The Lady Horses will be home to play Holy Trinity on Monday, then travel to Bethlehem on Friday before returning home to play Schenectady on Saturday at 10 am.

Baseball:

Current record: 4-4 (2-2 Colonial Council).

Trevor McCarthy's offense was missing in action most of the week, as Troy suffered shutout losses to LaSalle, Queensbury, & Lansingburgh, while shutting out Cohoes. Add the scores up, and Troy was outscored, 23-3, in the 4 games last week.

Next:

Troy hosts Mohonasen on Monday, Guilderland on Tuesday (weather permitting), and Ichabod Crane on Wednesday before visiting Albany Academy on Friday.

Lacrosse:

Current record: 1-5.

The losing streak continues, as Troy fell to Mohonasen-Schalmont-Schenectady. Saturday's home game vs. Hoosick Falls-Tamarac was postponed due to weather.

Next: The laxmen host Greenwich-Cambridge on Wednesday before visiting Stillwater-Mechanicville on Friday.

Saturday, April 26, 2025

News & notes

 As of press time, the following events were postponed or cancelled due to rain:

Women's lacrosse: LaSalle @ Academy of Holy Names---rescheduled for Tuesday, May 6.

Baseball: Voorheesville @ Ichabod Crane. No make up date has yet been set.

Also, a men's tennis tournament at Maple Hill has been cancelled.

Curiously, as of now, LaSalle is still planning on a varsity baseball game at Bruno Stadium, set to start at noon. Also at noon, Troy High is set to host Glens Falls in softball, with a men's lacrosse match set for Picken Field vs. Hoosick Falls-Tamarac at 1 pm. I hold no confidence on the softball game.
===================================================
Ian Anderson may be on the move again.

The Los Angeles Angels, who traded for Anderson last month, designated the Shenendehowa grad for assignment Friday after 7 appearances out of the bullpen, in which he was hot & cold, mostly cold, as he had an unsightly ERA at last check.

Something tells me either Atlanta will bring him back, or the Mets, Yankees, or Boston might have interest. So would the Texas Rangers, who have Ian's twin brother, Ben, in their minor league system. The Angels, as of yesterday, have 10 days to trade or release Anderson, or outright him to the minors.
=====================================================
If ex-Firebirds Dwayne Hollis and Darius Prince were looking forward to facing their former team when the 'Birds came to Corpus Christi, it didn't seem like it.

Hollis & Prince both missed the game, and the Tritons paid a terrible price, getting blown out of their own building in a 100-12 rout (yes, you read that right).

Photo courtesy Albany Times-Union.

Corpus Christi will be in town looking for payback next month, but, first, the 'Birds host Salina on May 4.
======================================================
The Reading Rebels dressed only 5 players, who had to play the full 48 minutes, for Friday's game at the NY Phoenix.

Recipe for disaster.

The Phoenix placed 8 players in double figures, as they blew away Reading, 148-105. As Chuck Miller reported earlier this week, Jersey Shore comes to Armory Studios tonight in place of the Rochester Kingz, who are having all kinds of problems. The Phoenix now have sole possession of 1st place in their division.
=========================================================
It was Black Friday for Troy High.

The Flying Horses saw their 5 game win streak end in softball in a 5 inning blowout loss to Ballston Spa, 14-1. The men's tennis team, which quietly had won 2 matches in a row, saw that streak end at the hands of Ichabod Crane, 6-1. Finally, Lansingburgh defeated Troy in baseball, 2-0. Trevor McCarthy's club has gone ice cold on offense, having scored just 3 runs in 4 games this week, and 6 in their last 5.

While the flag football team's game at Columbia has not been reported as of press time, assume the Blue Devils won.

News & notes

 In a rare case of mid-week scheduling, the NY Phoenix made their first appearance at the Washington Avenue Armory, and took back the lead in their division in The Basketball League with a 114-105 win over the Albany Patroons. However, the Phoenix lost star Shadell Millinghaus in the 1st quarter to a leg injury.

The Pats, now in 2nd, begin their Canadian Maritimes tour Friday at Halifax, Nova Scotia, while the Phoenix return to Armory Studios to host Reading.
======================================================
Former Northville women's basketball coach Jim Zullo was back in Troy City Court Tuesday, but it didn't last long.

After 5 minutes, judge Christopher Maier adjourned proceedings until May 6. The prosecution's discovery phase had been completed a week ago in the case of Zullo yanking the hair of Hailey Monroe last month, and Zullo's lawyer, Robert Abdella, had been offered a plea deal that would see Zullo pay a fine of $250, waive his right to an appeal, and accept a 2 year limited order of protection, the latter of which likely isn't necessary, since I doubt he'll see Monroe again any time soon.

News & notes

 I shan't be surprised if the DJ at the Albany Firebirds' home games finds a copy of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" to play for future home games.

The 'Birds completed a sweep of a home & home series vs. defending champion Billings Sunday night by blowing away the Outlaws, 39-7. Billings was held without a point for the final 53 minutes of the game. In other words, a 1st quarter touchdown was all the Outlaws could muster.

Albany pays a call on old friend Darius Prince & Corpus Christi on Friday night.
======================================================
The Albany FireWolves' season is over after the 'Wolves could not complete a home & home sweep at San Diego on Friday, losing, 10-9. After reaching the NLL finals last year, the 'Wolves end up missing the playoffs.

Troy High sports review, through April 19

 Easter break ends when classes resume on Tuesday. When play resumes, the weather will feel more like, ah, summer than spring. Go figure.

Men's tennis and women's flag football were idle this week. Their schedules will come at the end of this review.

Softball:

Current record: 3-2 (3-0 Colonial Council).

Only Mother Nature can slow down the Lady Horses, it seems. After beating Ravena & Holy Trinity at the start of the week, Sean Geisel's club got an unexpected day off when today's game at Ballston Spa was rained out. They've already rescheduled the game for Friday afternoon.

Next: It's going to be a busy week, as the Lady Horses will play their first ever game vs. LaSalle on Monday on the road. Then, they'll welcome Cohoes on Wednesday, travel to B-Spa on Friday, and host Glens Falls next Saturday.

Men's lacrosse:

Current record: 1-4 (1-2 Colonial Council).

After losing a tight one to Johnstown at home on Wednesday, the laxmen were blown off the field at Voorheesville on Friday.

Next: The Horses stay on the road at Mohonasen-Schenectady-Schalmont Wednesday. The game is at Schenectady High. Then, Hoosick Falls-Tamarac comes in next Saturday.

Baseball:

Current record: 3-1 (2-0 Colonial Council).

Trevor McCarthy's club took down Burnt Hills and Ravena this week, building momentum for a pending matchup with LaSalle.

After that, there's little rest, as Queensbury comes in for a non-league game on Tuesday, followed by Cohoes on Wednesday before finishing the week at Lansingburgh. The weather should be favorable all week.

Tennis:

Current record: 0-1.

We forgot about this last week, but Troy dropped its opener to Albany Academy on April 10.

Next: Cobleskill-Richmondville comes in Tuesday in a match that was originally set to be played a couple of weeks ago. The road match at Ichabod Crane was moved from Monday to Thursday.

Flag Football:

Current record: 3-1.

Next: After nearly 2 weeks off, Frank Rogers' club hosts Schenectady on Wednesday, then visits undefeated Columbia on Friday.

News & notes

 Husband & wife track & cross country coaches Arthur & Linda Kranick resigned from their positions at Saratoga High in an undated letter issued to student-athletes earlier this week, ending a 40+ year tenure at Saratoga.

Reports surfaced that the Kranicks had "overtraining" students, and urging athletes to run despite being injured, according to a report in today's Albany Times-Union, and a former athlete is afraid that the new coaches, who were trained by the Kranicks, could possibly continue the same methods.

Stay tuned.

Take a close look at the Times-Union's rankings for baseball & softball this week. Noticably absent from the Class AA Softball rankings is Troy High, which is 3-0 in Colonial Council play, but doesn't event merit a "team to watch" designation (space limitations, probably). The Lady Horses (3-2 overall) will have something to prove the rest of the way.

News & notes

 After thumping the Tri-State Admirals by 40 on Friday at the Washington Avenue Armory, the Albany Patroons were to face the Connecticut Crusaders on the road Sunday. One problem. The Crusaders' home gym was tied up with another event, so, due to scheduling conflicts, the game was postponed, and will be made up at a later date.
============================================
The Albany FireWolves aren't dead yet.

The 'Wolves closed the home portion of their schedule Saturday by beating San Diego, 12-10. The teams will have a rematch in San Diego on Friday to close the regular season. Albany needs to win to get into the playoffs.

The Albany Firebirds gained some sweet revenge on the Billings Outlaws on Sunday, crushing Billings by nearly 40, 62-24. Just another night at the office for QB Sam Castrunovo, who accounted for 6 touchdowns for the 4-0 Firebirds.

It's well known that UFC head honcho Dana White supports president Donald Trump, who was in attendance at Saturday's card.

Now, another Trump supporter wants to make a local MMA promotion into his answer to UFC.

Amsterdam businessman Anthony Constantino, owner & CEO of Sticker Mule, who caught heat locally last fall for some controversial displays of support for the then-candidate, has purchased a majority share in the local Cage Wars promotion, which has had events at the Washington Avenue Armory and other local venues.

We'll be more impressed, Mr. Constantino, if you can get a regional TV deal for Cage Wars.

News & notes

 The Albany FireWolves close out their regular season tonight at MVP Arena, hosting San Diego (WNYA, 7 pm), likely unable to make the postseason after their run last year.

In addition to the usual promotions, CDTA joined the promotion this year with ads on their buses, in the hopes that fans would turn out. Apparently, it isn't happening.
===============================================
Siena is saying good-bye to freshman Peppi Lohko from Finland, who is returning home to play pro ball next season. Lohko joined the Lady Saints in January, appearing in 15 games (13 starts), averaging 2.9 points & 2.5 rebounds per game.

Luckily, coach Terry Primm has some help coming. Albany's Azera Gates, currently starring for the Falcons in flag football, has committed to the Saints, and there are more players coming.

Sounds like next season may be a rebuilding year.
===============================================
Former Saint Ronald Moore is joining Fran McCaffrey's staff at Penn next season. The school's all time assist leader (823 assists) was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2017. This will be his first coaching job.

 Former Queensbury football coach John Irion has been named the new head coach for Bolton/Warrensburg/Lake George as the Wolverines begin to prepare for a new season after a sexual abuse scandal torpedoed their 2024 campaign. The three districts mutually agreed not to retain Mike Perrone and his staff after last year's season was cut short at 8-0.

Under Irion, Queensbury won a state title in 2013. In recent years, Irion has been an assistant coach at South Glens Falls, and has a career head coaching record of 172-102-1.
